‘Star Wars’ Death Star Designer Colin Cantwell Dies at 90, Fans Pay Tribute

Colin died at his Colorado home on May 21, 2022, Saturday. His longtime partner, Sierra Dall confirmed the news of his passing away to The Hollywood Reporter. As of now, the cause of his death has not been revealed.

Along with Star Wars movies, Cantwell also worked on other films such as 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), and WarGames (1983). He was undoubtedly one of the greatest concept artists.

A little bit about Colin’s personal life

Colin was born in San Francisco in the year 1932. Before trying his luck in Hollywood films, he got a degree in animation from the University of California, Los Angeles. Soon afterward, he attended Frank Lloyd Wright’s School of Architecture.

While growing up, Cantwell was diagnosed with tuberculosis as well as a partial retinal detachment. During a Reddit “Ask Me Anything” interview in 2016, he spilled the beans on the disease and stated how it affected him.

Colin said, “I spent nearly two years of my childhood immobilized in this dark room. Suffice to say, nothing else could slow me down after that!”. In the 1960’s he worked at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and NASA, on educational programs about flights. He also wrote two science fiction novels.

Followed by a user who penned, “I had the privilege of meeting Colin Cantwell with my family back in 2018. After hearing his presentation, I did the only thing that felt right. I shook his hand and said, ‘Thank you.'”

Another user wrote, “Colin Cantwell passed away, designed a lot of famous ships for @starwars and the Death Star. Very distinctive scenes that will be remembered forever, little bit underrated he was. But truly a creative designer. He’s one with the force now – absolutely fantastic immortal work.”
