The ground-breaking star Nichelle Nichols has left for the heavenly abode. As per various reports, the Star Trek actress passed away at the age of 89 on Saturday night.

How did Nichelle Nichols die?

Nichelle Nichols passed away on Saturday night, July 30, 2022, in Silver City, N.M. As of now, the cause of her death has not been revealed. The news of her death was shared by Gilbert Bell, her talent manager and business partner of 15 years.

Nichols was best noted for her role as Nyota Uhura in Star Trek: The Original Series, and its film sequels. At that point in time, her portrayal of Nyota was ground-breaking for African American actresses on American television.

Who was Nichelle Nichols?

Grace Dell Nichols popularly known as Nichelle Nichols was born on December 28, 1932 in Robbins, Illinois, U.S. She was an American actress, singer, and dancer. Her dad, Samuel Earl Nichols was a factory worker who was elected both town mayor of Robbins in 1929 and its chief magistrate, and his wife, Lishia (Parks) Nichols was a homemaker.

Nichols went to Englewood High School, from where she graduated in 1951. Soon afterward, she began acting. Her breakthrough performance came with Oscar Brown’s highly touted but ill-fated 1961 musical, Kicks and Co.

Nichelle made history by becoming one of the first black women featured in a major television series. She starred in many shows like The Lieutenant, Tarzan, Insight, Heroes and The Young and the Restless.

Lynda Carter wrote, “Many actors become stars, but few stars can move a nation. Nichelle Nichols showed us the extraordinary power of Black women and paved the way for a better future for all women in media. Thank you, Nichelle. We will miss you.”

Adam Nimoy tweeted, “My favorite photo of Dad and Nichelle Nichols on set. The importance of Nichelle’s legacy cannot be over-emphasized. She was much loved and will be missed.”

George Takei penned, “I shall have more to say about the trailblazing, incomparable Nichelle Nichols, who shared the bridge with us as Lt. Uhura of the USS Enterprise, and who passed today at age 89. For today, my heart is heavy, my eyes shining like the stars you now rest among, my dearest friend.”

Jill Hopkins further added, “We lost two greats. Two people who changed their respective games. Two Black Icons. Rest easy Nichelle Nichols and Bill Russell. And thank you.” Kate Mulgrew wrote, “Nichelle Nichols was The First. She was a trailblazer who navigated a very challenging trail with grit, grace, and a gorgeous fire we are not likely to see again. May she Rest In Peace.”
