Luis Rubiales has announced his resignation after getting engulfed in a controversy over the kiss scandal. For those of you who are unaware, let us share with you, that he kissed a Women’s World Cup player named Jenni Hermoso last month after Spain defeated England.
BBC has reported that last Tuesday Jenni Hermoso filed a legal complaint against Luis for sexual assault at the National Court. She has stated that the kiss was not consensual. Rubiales recently addressed the members of the Spanish Football Federation at a meeting held in Madrid.
Luis has already submitted his resignation letter to Pedro Rocha, the football federation’s acting president. In addition to this, he has also resigned as vice-president of Uefa’s executive committee.
While making an appearance on the television show, Piers Morgan Uncensored, he told the host, “I’m going to (resign), yes, I cannot continue my work.” He continued, “(Family and friends) say to me ‘Luis, you need to focus on your dignity and continue your life. If not you are going to damage people you love and the sport you love’.”
What did Luis Rubiales have to say about his resignation?
In a statement issued, the 46-year-old said, “After the rapid suspension carried out by FIFA, plus the rest of the proceedings opened against me, it is clear that I will not be able to return to my position.”
Rubiales went on to say, “Insisting on waiting and clinging… is not going to contribute anything positive, neither to the Federation nor to Spanish football. Among other things, because there are de facto powers that will prevent my return.”
He added, “I have faith in the truth and I will do everything in my power to prevail. My daughters, my family and the people who love me have suffered the effects of excessive persecution, as well as many falsehoods, but it is also true that on the street, more and more every day, the truth is prevailing.”
Luis has mentioned that the kiss was consensual but the kiss controversy has sparked a debate online. It seemed like he continued to defend his actions.
