The Texas congressman Van Taylor is making headlines for unbelievable reasons. The Republican representative dropped off from his reelection campaign, citing his extra-marital affair with a widow of a senior ISIS recruiter.
FYI, Tania Joya is the widow of the ISIS recruiter John Georgelas, an American who joined ISIS in 2013. She married him in Syria and wanted to become a suicide bomber. Later Joya moved to Texas.
Van Taylor apologised for his irreparable mistake. Joya aka “ISIS Bride” or “first lady of ISIS” was in a 9-month affair with Van. He dropped his bid for a third term, stating:
“About a year ago, I made a horrible mistake that has caused deep hurt and pain among those I love most in this world. I had an affair, it was wrong, and it was the greatest failure of my life,” he said in an email to supporters.”
The news comes as a shock to his supporters. The Texas politician wrote a letter to them apologising for his mistake and said, “I had an affair, it was wrong, and it was the greatest failure of my life.” He also apologised to his wife Anne and his three daughters.
Who is Tania Joya?
Tania Joya is the daughter of a senior postmaster from Harrow in northwest London. She hails from Bangladesh. Tania’s first husband John Georgelas married Joya when she was 20. In 2013, Joya and John moved to Syria to join the ISIS state but only John succeeded.
Joya fled with her four children and moved to Texas. In an interview with ‘The Atlantic’, she said that her husband abandoned her to become the next Osama bin Laden”. Now, she works to reprogram those who have been brainwashed towards radicalism.
The ISIS bride exposes Van Taylor
Joya met Van Taylor, a Marine vet, through a program combating extremism. They both bonded and Van supported her emotionally and financially. She said, “I needed help. I needed a hero, somebody who I thought cared. Van kept saying he cared,” he said. “It wasn’t just a sexual affair … it was emotionally, too.”
In November Joya contacted Van Taylor’s wife Anne and revealed her relationship after he completely broke her. She had previously asked him to leave his wife and marry her but he said he can’t do it because of his three daughters. However, Joya alleged him having affairs with other Indian women. She told Van:
“If it’s just about your child, well guess what, divorce is pretty normal today. We’re not living in the 18th century,” she said. “But he wouldn’t because he doesn’t want to lose my reputation as a Republican conservative. He didn’t want people to say that his marriage wasn’t perfect.”
This expose was orchestrated by GOP candidate Suzanne Harp as Joya contacted her to expose Van Taylore and persuade him to drop off from his reelection campaign. The GOP candidate is a strong critique of Mr Van.
Harp sent a supporter to take audio of the discussion with Joya. The audio was later published by “National File” and even Van Taylor confessed to his affair. Joya said that she didn’t want the news to blow up like this but only wanted Van to step down from his campaign.
Consequences of the expose
This news has plunged his primary votes from 51.8% (earlier lead) t0 45.2%. Van Taylor was just on the verge of his victory against Mr Self who ended up at 26.5%. However, he suspended his campaign after a formal apology to his supporters.
The two-term congressman still has to serve out the remainder of his term. What do you think about this scandal?
