What was the cause of Pyro’s death?
Howie’s representative confirmed in a statement that he passed away at the age of 61 on May 4, 2022, due to complications from COVID-19-related pneumonia following a liver transplant and liver disease. Losing a loved one is never easy, we send lots of strength and light to his friends and family during this difficult time.
Pyro is survived by his sister Robin Hartmann, Rory and Leah Hartmann, former wife Andrea Kusten Matthews, and many cousins. His family has requested that all those who wish to pay tribute to him can consider donating to the UCLA Division of Liver and Pancreas Transplantation.
The bass player will be laid to rest at Hollywood Forever Cemetery. He will always be remembered by his fans for the great legacy he has left behind.
Howie worked with many artists throughout his musical career
Pyro was born on June 28, 1960, he was the founding member of both The Blessed and D Generation. He was a DJ at the Green Door parties. He was a part of the New York City punk scene in the 1970s as a member of the underage band the Blessed, who played Max’s Kansas City and CBGB.
In the past, Howie collaborated with many artists including Danzig, Johnny Thunders, Rancid, Joey Ramone, the Misfits, Debbie Harry, Alan Vega, and Kid Congo Powers.
