Man Dies After Falling from Escalator at The Weeknd’s Concert in Philadelphia

A tragic incident has taken place after the Weeknd’s After Hours til Dawn opening show at the Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia on July 14. A man at the concert fell to his death from a 40 feet high escalator rail.

As per the official report, the 32-year-old man was sitting on an escalator rail when he accidentally fell and suffered major head injuries. Read on to know details about the unfortunate news.

Police Says the Fall was Accidental

The incident occurred around 10:50 pm at the stadium. The man was rushed to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, where he was declared dead shortly after midnight. Police have said that they have investigated the incident and the fall appeared to be accidental with ‘no foul play suspected’.

The deceased has not been identified officially. However, CBS3 in Philadelphia has identified the man as Hugo Sanchez through his friends. Bob Lange, senior vice president of communications for the Philadelphia Eagles team, which operates the Lincoln Financial Field, said he believed the accident happened after the concert was over as people were leaving.

An internal message was sent to the employees working at the concert. It read, “We understand that a serious accident occurred at the concert last night and that many of you may be experiencing a range of emotions. We value our employees and are committed to providing support. As a reminder, there are resources available to assist during difficult times.”

The Weeknd Has Not Yet Commented on the Incident

After the concert, the Weeknd shared a series of photos from the event but did not mention the accident. He wrote, “Philadelphia … we finally did it. thank you for helping me ring in the tour. last night was emotional for all of us. i could feel every single one of you. next stop NEW YORK !”

The tour promoter Live Nation and the representatives of Lincoln Financial Field are also yet to comment on the matter.

After Hours til Dawn Tour

The Weeknd’s After Hours til Dawn tour is in support of his fourth studio album After Hours (2020) and his fifth studio album Dawn FM (2022). It is the singer’s seventh concert tour overall.

The tour was initially scheduled to begin on June 11, 2020, in Vancouver and end on November 16, 2020, in London. However, it was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The tour was postponed again in 2021 due to arena constraints before finally seeing the light with the singer’s Philadelphia concert.

The tour will go on till September 22 this year, with the final concert in Toronto, Canada. Doja Cat was scheduled to open the show in North America but had to cancel due to tonsil surgery. She was replaced by Canadian DJ Kaytranada, Snoh Aalegra, and American record producer Mike Dean.

The Weeknd was also in the news recently for his new show The Idol on HBO. The teaser of the show, in which he stars opposite Lily-Rose Depp, was unveiled a few days ago. Apart from starring, the Weeknd has also served as the creator, executive producer, and co-writer for the show.
