Lady Gaga is facing severe backlash for her paid partnership with Pfizer. The pop star recently joined hands with the pharmaceutical giant to promote its migraine drug Nurtec and appeared in a commercial for the same.
However, a number of social media users were disappointed with the move, stating that healthcare should not be mixed with money and profit-making. The advertisement is now being called ‘cringe’ and Gaga is being called out.
Lady Gaga Faces Backlash for Paid Partnership with Pfizer
The 37-year-old singer took to Instagram on June 13th to advertise the drug. She posted a picture of herself from a concert, along with two images of safety information regarding Nurtec ODT, and wrote, “Ever since childhood, I’ve dealt with migraine pain.”
“When I tried Nurtec ODT (rimegepant) 75mg for the first time, I’ll never forget wishing I had found it sooner. That’s why I’m proud to partner with Nurtec ODT. We’re in this together. If you’re ready to speak to a doctor, ask about Nurtec ODT today,” she added.
Gaga also added an allergic warning in the caption. The Bad Romance singer then also appeared in a commercial for the drug. The 30-second ad featured her singing and playing piano while her voiceover said, “I know what it’s like to perform through pain.”
“If you’re like me, one of the millions suffering from pain caused by migraine, Nurtec ODT may help. It’s the only medication that can treat a migraine when it strikes and prevent migraine attacks. Treat and prevent, all in one. We’re in this together. Talk to a doctor about Nurtec ODT,” Gaga added.
Social Media Furious Over the Advertisement
Several social media users have expressed their anger over the advertisement. “Healthcare is a human right, not a commodity to exploit for the sake greed and wealth. I know you are compassionate, intelligent and thoughtful. I hope you will show that through the ways you use your platform and privilege moving forward. This ain’t it,” tweeted a user.
Another wrote, “Girl what the hell happened to you that you’re like this and care about money this way and nothing else anymore? Not the person who used to say ‘I f—ing hate money’ in 2009.”
“Lady Gaga is doing paid promotion for Pfizer & promoting their meds. Big Pharma is ruining this country. It has swallowed up both sides of politics, the media, the food supply, the entertainment industry & our country is suffering,” a third tweeted.
Gaga Gets Support from Some Fans
In the majority of hate, some fans were also seen supporting their favorite singer. A few brought up that Gaga has been suffering from fibromyalgia, a chronic disease, that causes severe pain in the body.
“Little monsters when they realize that Gaga, who wrote a whole album about being in pain, who has been telling us for over a decade about her chronic pain illness, and who has had to cancel entire tours due to her relentless pain, may actually be in pain,” tweeted a fan.
