Katy Perry is getting a lot of hate online because of her decision to vote for billionaire Rick Caruso in the Los Angeles mayoral elections. The pop star shared a photo on Instagram on Monday, that showed her casting her vote for Caruso against Congresswoman Karen Bass.
Fans are disappointed with Perry for supporting the candidate who switched to Democrats from Republicans in 2019 and had earlier supported anti-abortion policies. Read on to know more about the development.
Katy Perry Voted for Rick Caruso in LA Mayoral Elections
On November 7, Perry raised eyebrows after posting a series of photos casting her vote for the Mayoral elections. “I am voting for a myriad of reasons (see the news) but in particular because Los Angeles is a hot mess atm. #letsgocaruso #yestomeasure28 #yestomeasure1 #doyoubutjustuseyourvoteok,” the 38 year old wrote in the caption.
The post resulted in backlash from fans, who accused the singer of voting against progressivism by not supporting Representative Karen Bass. Perry was being slammed in her comments, after which she turned the section off.
Caruso is a real-estate billionaire who had previously supported anti-abortion organizations. He has now pledged $1 million to support the abortion rights proposition, but the donation has not been made yet. His election promises include combatting homelessness and the high number of crimes in the city.
Fans and Celebrities Slam Katy Perry
Several celebrities called out Perry for her decision on social media. Comedian Travon Free tweeted, “As much as the right try to spin it, Katy Perry voting for Rick Caruso is not an indication of anything other than a rich white woman voting for a fake democrat who will ultimately have no effect on the quality of her life but will worsen the lives of many others.”
A fan wrote, “katy perry tweeting out a pro-choice video while voting for rick caruso would be objectively hilarious if it wasn’t painfully dumb.” Another one tweeted, “Katy Perry shared a pro choice video earlier this week, then voted Republican today. I can’t explain fully just how dumb that is.”
“Katy Perry voting for Rick Caruso for LA Mayor is incredibly disappointing. Please vote Karen Bass a community oriented politician not a businessman with a redundant platform on homelessness and and a history of donating to anti-choice orgs and initiatives,” tweeted another fan.
Perry had Expressed her Support for Caruso Earlier as well
This is not the first time that Perry has openly supported the Democrat. In June this year, she made it clear that she was going to vote for Caruso when she tweeted, “RICK CARUSO FTW❗️” The singer had received criticism then as well.
The businessman had then responded, “Katy, thank you for your support. One day, I hope to be able to serve all Angelenos.” Meanwhile, a number of other celebrities have also pledged their support for Caruso, including Snoop Dogg, Kim Kardashian, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Chris Pratt.
“I’ve lived in LA for over 20 years. It’s been great to me… In that time I’ve seen what many residents here have seen, the city’s gradual decline into pain and utter disarray. If you live here, you know exactly what I’m talking about. I don’t normally support political candidates. But in this election, there’s too much to lose,” Pratt wrote in his Instagram story.
