Twitch streamer Kai Cenat taken into custody following giveaway in New York City
Kai Cenat’s recent giveaway in New York City’s Union Park was chaotic. It has been reported by the New York Police Department, that the Twitch video game streamer was removed from the area for his safety.
As per NBC News, three officers were injured during the scuffle. Along with this, a sergeant broke his hand. Jeffrey Maddrey, the police chief of New York City revealed that more than 60 people were arrested. At least 30 of them were juveniles.
The media outlet CNN stated that during a Wednesday stream, Twitch revealed that he would be hosting a “huge giveaway” on Friday at 4 p.m. in Union Square Park. Then, he specified that he would give away Play Station 5s, computers, headphones, microphones, gaming chairs, keyboards, webcams, and gift cards. The event was supposed to start at 4 p.m., but by 3 p.m., the park was fully packed.
Maddrey talked about the incident and said, “It was about 300 people around 1:30, not a big crowd, something we would expect for a social media event like this. But this event grew exponentially, rapidly, fast, and again this is the power of social media. There were thousands of young people here at this event. This wasn’t a permitted event. It wasn’t a sanctioned event.”
He stated that Cenat was taken away by the cops ‘for safety reasons.’ He mentioned that the crowd became violent and allegedly broke into a construction site and used its materials as weapons. He further added, “We were attacked. Young people destroyed our vehicles. My car is destroyed. They destroyed food carts. They destroyed stores.”
