Famous British Astrologer Mystic Meg Passes Away at 80

Well-known British astrologer Mystic Meg has passed away at the age of 80. The horoscope expert and television figure was in the hospital since last month after suffering from flu and died in the early hours of March 9.

Meg, whose real name was Margaret Anne Lake, wrote horoscopes for the Sun for over 20 years. She shot to fame in the 1990s due to her appearance on the television show National Lottery. Read on to know more about her life and career.

Astrologer Mystic Meg Dies at 80

Meg’s longtime Dave Shapland, confirmed the news of her demise with a statement on Thursday. He said, “Without any question, she was Britain’s most famous astrologer by a million miles. Nobody came close to Meg in that respect. She was followed by millions in this country and also around the world.”

“She even became part of the English language – if a politician, somebody from showbiz or ordinary people in the street are asked a tricky question, they will say, Who do you think I am, Mystic Meg? It shows what an impact she made,” Shapland added.

Margaret was born on July 27, 1942, in Accrington, Lancashire. She learned astrology from her grandmother while growing up. After graduating from the University of Leeds, Meg started her career as a sub-editor at the News of the World. She then changed her name to Eileen Anderson in the 1980s and was made the paper’s regular astrologer.

Meg Hosted the First Broadcast of the National Lottery Draw in 1994

The fortune-teller rose to prominence by hosting the first broadcast of the National Lottery Draw on BBC One in 1994. She continued to appear on the show till 2000 and used to predict facts about the lottery winner before they were officially announced. Meg continued to be an astrologer with News of the World until the paper was discontinued in 2011.

Her predictions also made it to the newspapers in the US and Australia. The astrologer was known for her signature runes, crystal balls, tarot cards and I Ching. She was also the author of several books, including Mystic Meg’s Lucky Numbers For Love Life And The Lottery and Mystic Meg’s Astrolife.

The Sun’s Editor Pays Tribute to the Astrologer

On behalf of The Sun, editor Victoria Newton released a statement: “This is devastating news. We have lost an icon. Our brilliant and incomparable Meg was synonymous with The Sun – she was a total legend. We loved her, and so did our readers.”

“For more than two decades, Mystic Meg has been a must-read column and cemented her as Britain’s most famous astrologer. She was a true professional whose guidance helped our readers daily – our postbag bears testament to this. Farewell Meg. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Our thoughts are with her family and friends.”

Israeli-British TV personality Uri Geller also paid tribute to the deceased and said, “The quintessential fortune-teller who brought mystery and mystique to millions of believers. She defied the dreary sceptics, as did her fans. Much love and positive energy, Meg, on your onward journey.”
