Not long ago, the Oscar-winning screenwriter and director Paul Haggis got arrested by the police authorities in Ostuni, Southern Italy on charges of sexual assault. Read further to know more about the whole matter.
Why was Paul Haggis arrested?
The Canadian screenwriter was arrested by the cops in Italy not only on the charges of sexual assault but also due to aggravated personal injury allegedly inflicted upon a still-unidentified woman who has pressed charges.
As per various Italian press reports, and a note that has been penned down by a public prosecutor of the nearby city of Brindisi. It’s been reported that Paul is charged with pressurizing a young “foreign” which means non-Italian woman to undergo sexual intercourse over the course of two days in Ostuni.
For those of you who are unaware, let us tell you Paul was present in Italy to hold a few master classes at the Allora Fest which is a new film event that’s being organized by Los Angeles-based Italian journalist Silvia Bizio and Spanish art critic Sol Costales Doulton. The fest is set to take place in Ostuni from June 21 to June 26. Bizio has told Variety that at the moment, Paul is under arrest.
What did Paul’s lawyer have to say on the case?
Haggis’ personal attorney Priya Chaudhry issued a statement that read “Under Italian Law, I cannot discuss the evidence. That said, I am confident that all allegations will be dismissed against Mr. Haggis. He is totally innocent and willing to fully cooperate with the authorities so the truth comes out quickly.”
In the same statement, The Allora Fest stated that they have “learned with dismay and shock the news that Paul Haggis is in custody for alleged violence.”
The directors of the Allora Fest went on to say, they “immediately proceeded to remove any participation of the director from the event” and “At the same time, they express full solidarity with the woman involved.”
They further added, “The themes chosen for the festival are, among others, those of equality, gender equality, and solidarity. As professionals and women they are dismayed and hope that the festival will help foster more information and awareness on such a topical and increasingly pressing issue.”
More details about Paul’s case
According to an Italian police report, after being assaulted, the alleged victim was taken by Haggis to the Papola Casale airport in Brindisi and then he left there on Friday morning at the crack of dawn, despite her “precarious physical and psychological conditions.”
As per the report, the alleged rape victim was found in a confused state of mind. Soon afterward, the victim was helped by the airport staff and border police who, after having given her first aid, led her to the offices of the Italian squadra mobile police unit.
The police authorities took the woman to A. Perrino hospital in Brindisi where Italy’s so-called “pink protocol” for rape victims was put into effect. After a while, the alleged victim pressed formal charges against Paul.
