Star anchor and US correspondent Chris Cuomo has been fired by the CNN news publication on 4th December.
The cable news channel said that he is involved in helping his brother Andrew Cuomo, the former New York governor, who is battling charges of an allegation of sexual misconduct.
CNN said that they have received concrete information that Chris Cuomo is involved in the defense of his older brother. Letitia James, New York attorney general disclosed text messages that confirmed his involvement in his brother’s political affairs. The company has hired one of the best law firms to investigate Chris Cuomo’s effort to help his brother.
CNN Sacks Chris Cuomo for helping his politician brother Andrew Cuomo
Mr. Cuomo had the patronage of CNN’s president, Jeff Zucker, until last month and he did not face any disciplinary action for his behind-the-scenes help to his politician brother that was a breach of basic journalistic norms.
He has been terminated after some documents emerged that Cuomo, who anchored the prime time slot at 9:00 pm, has assisted his politician brother that was against the company policies.
Andrew Cuomo has resigned in the month of August as the prosecutor revealed that he has harassed staff. CNN posted a statement on its official Twitter handle, “We retained a respected law firm to conduct the review, and have terminated him, effective immediately. While in the process of that review, additional information has come to light.”
A spokesperson for CNN said, “The documents, which we were not privy to before their public release, raise serious questions. They point to a greater level of involvement in his brother’s efforts than we previously knew.”
Cuomo has spent almost 8 years with CNN and was one of its best recognizable news presenters who also covered the recent 2020 US Presidential elections. It was an awkward moment for CNN staff on Saturday as they had to report the sacking of one of its own anchors.
There was an allegation against Chris Cuomo of Sexual misconduct by an ex-colleague at another network according to Debra S. Katz, a prominent employment lawyer. She said, “This case is unrelated to the Gov. Andrew Cuomo matter.”
Ms. Katz happens to be the same lawyer representing Charlotte Bennett, who accused the former governor of sexual harassment in February 2020.
The text message sent by 51-year old Cuomo was read by his colleague, media reporter Brian Stelter, “This is not how I want my time at CNN to end but I have already told you why and how I helped my brother. So let me now say as disappointing as this is, I could not be more proud of the team at ‘Cuomo Prime Time. I owe them all and will miss that group of special people who did really important work.”
