Who was Gordon Lightfoot?

For those of you who are unaware, let us share with you, Gordon Lightfoot was a Canadian singer-songwriter and guitarist who shot to fame in the 70s. He was born on November 17, 1938, in Orillia, Ontario to Jessie Vick Trill Lightfoot and Gordon Lightfoot Sr.

The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald singer had an elder sister named Beverley who passed away in the year 2017. His mom saw the artist in him at a young age and helped him to become a successful child performer.

Gordon came a long way from being a rural choirboy to becoming a part of the Canadian folk scene. In 1970, he released the song If You Could Read My Mind and it received good feedback from the viewers. The track which was inspired by his divorce landed on the Billboard Hot 100.

Soon after, the Scottish-descent musician dropped three more Reprise albums: Summer Side of Life (1971), Don Quixote (1972), and Old Dan’s Records (1972). All of his albums were hit. Then, he released his LP Sundown in the year 1974 and it went gold. He worked with many top artists like Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley, Sarah McLachlan, and Barbra Streisand.

While having a chat with Rolling Stone in 2019, Lightfoot said that audiences embraced his songs because of “the turn of the phrase. Or the fact that they’re so simple… They’re all tunes that move along and have a forward momentum, which is what I look for in my writing. Forward momentum.”
