Betty White, The Legendary Actress and Comedian Dies Aged 99

Legendary American actress and comedian “Betty White”, who gained huge recognition for her comedic work on several television sitcoms including “The Mary Tyler Moore Show”, “The Golden Girls” and “Hot in Cleveland” among others has died aged 99.

The news has been confirmed by her agent and close friend Jeff Witjas. He said that it was not clear if White took her last breath on Thursday night or Friday.

“I truly never thought she was going to pass away,” Witjas told The Associated Press. “She meant the world to me as a friend. She was the most positive person I’ve ever known.”

Betty White dies at 99, a few days shy of celebrating her 100th Birthday

Betty who was about to turn 100 on 17th January 2022 was about to celebrate her 100th birthday with her fans.

She had earlier planned for a special movie event – “Betty White: 100 Years Young — A Birthday Celebration.”

But sadly, she has left the world just a few days before that could happen.

About Betty White

She has been in the entertainment industry for over eight decades now and is considered to be a pioneer of early television. She is known not just for her work in front of the camera but also for her contribution behind the camera.

Betty White happens to be the first woman to produce a national TV show, Life with Elizabeth. In 1955, she was named the honorary Mayor of Hollywood.

She received immense love and fame for portraying the characters of Sue Ann Nivens on the CBS sitcom The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Rose Nylund on the NBC sitcom The Golden Girls, Elka Ostrovsky on the TV Land sitcom Hot in Cleveland, among others.

White who made her name in the television industry was also seen being a staple panelist of American game shows like Password, Match Game, Tattletales, To Tell the Truth, The Hollywood Squares, and The $25,000 Pyramid. White became popular as “the first lady of game shows”.

She also gained recognition for her performances in the American TV shows The Bold and the Beautiful, Boston Legal, The Carol Burnett Show, and Saturday Night Live.

She has been the recipient of many accolades owing to her stellar performances like a Grammy Award, multiple Emmy Awards, American Comedy Awards, Screen Actors Guild Awards among others.

Apart from her successful acting career, she is also known for being an animal rights activist.

After the news of her death broke, social media has been flooded with messages from her fans, celebrities, politicians including US President Joe Biden who also paid tributes to the late legend.

Biden wrote, “Betty White brought a smile to the lips of generations of Americans. She’s a cultural icon who will be sorely missed. Jill and I are thinking of her family and all those who loved her this New Year’s Eve.”

Celebrities like Ryan Reynolds, Seth Meyers, Reese Witherspoon, and many others offered condolences to the late comedian by taking to social media.
