Deborah’s family shared the sad news on her Instagram page

On Tuesday, James’ family issued a statement regarding her passing away on the social media platform Instagram that read, “We are deeply saddened to announce the death of Dame Deborah James; the most amazing wife, daughter, sister, mummy. Deborah passed away peacefully today, surrounded by her family.”

They further added, “Deborah, who many of you will know as Bowelbabe, was an inspiration and we are incredibly proud of her and her work and commitment to charitable campaigning, fundraising, and her endless efforts to raise awareness of cancer that touched so many lives.”

Post the death announcement, her family stated they plan to continue Deborah’s legacy through her BowelBabe fund. They went on to say, “And a few final things from Deborah…“find a life worth enjoying; take risks; love deeply; have no regrets; and always, always have rebellious hope. And finally, check your poo – it could just save your life.” x

A little bit about Deborah’s personal life

Deborah was born on October 1, 1981, in London, England. She was the daughter of  Heather and Alistair James. She went to Salesian School, Chertsey, and soon afterward she attended the University of Exeter to study economics.

James was married to Sebastian Bowen, a banker who works for Pomona Capital. The two of them tied the knot in the year 2008. They celebrated 13 years of marriage in September last year.

The couple had two kids together. James shared a 14-year-old son Hugo and a daughter named Eloise who is 13 years old with her husband Sebastian Bowen.

When was Deborah diagnosed with cancer?

For those of you who are unaware, let us tell you Deborah was diagnosed with cancer in 2016. At one point in the past, she announced that she was cancer-free after a long-term battle with the life-threatening stage IV diagnosis.

In 2020, the host of the BBC’s You, Me and the Big C podcast revealed that she was in remission. At the time she wrote, “It’s a bit bonkers (and I haven’t honestly processed this for a few reasons), but right now, I have no evidence of cancer in my body!!. Which seems bonkers considering at one stage I had 15 tumours!”

The U.K. Native took to her Instagram in May of 2022 to share a piece of heartbreaking news. She stated that she was no longer receiving active care and did not know how long she had left.

“The message I never wanted to write. We have tried everything, but my body simply isn’t playing ball. My active care has stopped and I am now moved to hospice at-home care, with my incredible family all around me and the focus is on making sure I’m not in pain and spending time with them,” Deborah wrote on her Instagram page.

We send our deepest condolences to the close friends and family of Deborah James during this difficult time. Don’t forget to stay in touch with us for the latest updates from the world.
