Amateur Teenage Boxer Donovan Garcia Dies in Car Crash
The accident took place on January 11, after which Garcia spent a few days in the hospital unresponsive, suffering from severe brain injuries. His family decided to keep him on life support, and he eventually died on January 17. The exact details of how and where the accident happened have not been disclosed by the family yet.
Announcing the news, Garcia’s family said, “Donovan fought his biggest battle and went seven rounds, but he was tired. His family wants everyone to know that he is at peace and they are at peace with God’s will. Thank you, everyone, for the continued prayers, support, and love. Donovan’s memory and legacy will live on forever.”
“Donovan was loved by the boxing community and many more. Boxing was his passion, and he won many championships. He has a heart of gold and put everyone before himself. He will be greatly missed by all,” the family said further.
Garcia Won Several Championships
The boxer had a short but successful career. He won a number of honors, including the 2019 Golden Gloves, Junior Olympics State Championship, and Silver Gloves State Championship. His family is now planning to organize a memorial in his honor, and has set up a GoFundMe campaign for the same.
“My 15 year old cousin, Donovan, was in a major car accident on Wednesday, January 11, 2023. He suffered severe brain injuries. Donovan’s final test was conducted yesterday. He was not responsive.”
“They legally pronounced Donovan dead at 6:18 pm on Tuesday, January 17, 2023,” reads the campaign page. The fundraiser has till now garnered donations of $5,300 out of the $15,000 target.
The Boxer’s Friends Mourn his Death
A number of people have expressed their shock and grief over Donovan’s death on social media. “Don was more a brother than a friend to me, showed me what loyalty and honesty really means and to stick with your people even through the worst. I miss you bro,” wrote a friend.
Another one wrote, “My deepest sympathies to all of Donovan’s family and friends. I had the privilege of officiating several of his boxing events. He always conducted himself with great charisma, class and skills.”
