Who is Anna Wintour?

At the age of 72, Anna Wintour is still an unrivaled fashion icon. She has been a chairwoman of the Met Gala event since 1995. Also, she is the one who looks after the top-secret guest list for the event.

British-American journalist Anna Wintour is editor-in-chief of Vogue for more than three decades now. She is also considered to be one of the most influential personalities in the field of fashion. She is also the chief content officer of the global mass media company, Condé Nast.

The movie “The Devil Wears Prada” transformed her image from a public personality to a cultural icon.

Early Life

Anna Wintour was born in the year 1949 in Hampstead, London. She started her career in the field of fashion and then moved to journalism. Her father Charles Wintour, who was the editor of the London Evening Standard for more than two decades arranged her first job at Bib boutique at the age of 15.

Early Career

She started her training program at Harrods after leaving North London Collegiate. She used to simultaneously take fashion classes at a nearby school. Wintour was recruited by the new Harper’s & Queen fashion magazine as an editorial assistant in 1970.

Wintour had the dream to join Vogue magazine when she started her career which was fulfilled almost after two decades. Following several disagreements with her rival, Min Hogg, she decided to leave the company and relocated to New York with her boyfriend Jon Bradshaw.

Anna began her journey as a junior fashion editor at Harper’s Bazaar in the year 1975. However, she was sacked within less than one year for trying to put forth daring and innovative shoots. After some time she got the opportunity as a fashion editor with Viva, however, as the company was in the doldrums it was shut down in 1978.

Wintour decided to take a break during this time and her relationship with Bradshaw went sour. She was in a new relationship with French record producer Michel Estaban. For almost two years, she spent time between New York and Paris.

In 1980, Wintour became the fashion editor for New York. Wintour, at last, got an opportunity to work for her dream company Vogue when Alex Liberman, editorial director for Conde Nast, the publisher of Vogue hinted to her about a role in 1983.

Wintour got selected and became the magazine’s first creative director. She was nicknamed Nuclear Wintour during her tenure as Editor with Vogue as she took bold decisions to replace staff and had much greater control over the affairs of the magazine compared to her previous counterparts.

Conde Nast urged her to take over House & Garden in 1987 as the company was struggling to keep the readership intact. She made transformational changes in the company. After ten months Anna Wintour was elevated as the editor of U.S. Vogue.

Stint at Vogue

Wintour brought many changes to Vogue that were visible on its cover page. She was in favor of more naturalistic pics of models who are less famous compared to the tight headshots preferred by the magazine.

Wintour gained prominence and became a household name during the 2000s. The company published the issue in September 2004 which was the largest issue at that time with whopping 832 pages. The magazine was then spun off into three different types, namely Teen Vogue, Vogue Living, and Men’s Vogue.

Personal life

Anna married David Shaffer in 1984 and separated after 15 years of marriage in 1999. The couple shares two children together – Charles and Katherine.

In 2004, she then married business investor Shelby Bryan. The couple separated 16 years later in 2020. They do not have any children together.
