Kim Kardashian Rocks 2022 Met Gala in Marilyn Monroe’s ‘Happy Birthday, Mr. President’ Iconic Dress

If you’ve seen the recent Netflix documentary “The Mystery of Marilyn Monroe: The Unheard Tapes”, you’d recall that moment when Marilyn gave a special performance on President John F. Kennedy’s birthday.

if we keep aside the controversial affair between  JFK and Monroe, her naked dress was the most talked-about attire of those times. And guess what? Kim Kardashian wore the iconic $4.8 million dress to the 2022 Met Gala as she walked the red carpet alongside Pete Davidson.

Kim is the modern-day Monroe

Now, it might be a bit too much to compare the SKIMS founder to the most beautiful woman ever. But again, she did manage to grab Marilyn’s most iconic dresses for this year’s Met Gala event.

Kim walked the red carpet alongside Pete Davidson and wore the same naked dress that Marilyn Monroe wore when she performed for President JFK’s birthday in 1962. Remember when she was surrounded by controversies for being the only person present on the stage and singing “Happy Birthday, Mr President”. Well, it’s the same dress from that iconic night.

And there’s more to it! It wasn’t easy for Kim Kardashian to fit in this iconic dress so she lost around 16 pounds in three weeks to fit in Monroe’s iconic sparkling dress. Yesterday, Kim arrived bleached blonde and sports the historical outfit.

The history behind the Dress

The sparkly dress has been on display at Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum in Orlando, Fla since its purchase in 2016 for around $4.8 million, making it one of the most expensive dresses ever sold.

Kim visited the museum in April with her boyfriend Pete Davidson which already sparked rumours that she could be wearing a vintage piece. The 41-year-old star revealed in an interview that she would not be able to tailor her Met Gala gown at all. She said, “I think it will be up to the last minute because it can’t be tailored, so I have to fit into it like exactly,”

The initial price of this dress back in the 60s was $12,000 and was designed by Jean Louis. It was reported so tight that Marilyn had to be sewn into it before her performance.  History repeated itself once again. Kim had to shred some weight t fit herself into this iconic dress.

Kim’s Previous Met Gala Looks

Kim Kardashian has made eight appearances at the Met Gala since 2013, and her versatile dresses have always caught the attention of the most well-dressed celebrities. However, Kim’s first appearance didn’t go as she expected it to be.

In 2013, Kim K. wore a rose-printed gown with build-in gloves and matching heels during her pregnancy. The theme was: “Punk: Chaos to Couture”. However, fans criticized her for looking like an outdated couch.

In 2014, she appeared in an elegant blue-and-black gown by Lanvin for the theme “Charles James: Beyond Fashion” In 2015’s “China: Through The Looking Glass” gala, Kim wore a fabulously feathered confection.

The 2016 Met Gala theme was “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology”. Kim wore a futuristic silver gown by Olivier Rousteing for Balmain. At 2017, “Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between” Gala, she wore a beach off-the-shoulder Vivienne Westwood dress.

The 2018 Met Gala had the most memorable theme “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination,” and Kardashian wore a  cross-covered gold metal mesh gown by Versace.

The 2019’s “Camp: Notes on Fashion” gala was different. Kim wore a skin-toned Thierry Mugler mini with dangling crystal trim. It felt as if she just stepped out of the water.  Her 2021 look was the most creative one.

Kim chose Balenciaga’s Demna Gvasalia for the “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion”-themed event, and appeared in an all-black getup and  $10,000 (and 75 inches) hair extensions. This year’s getup remains the most iconic look of Kim K, thanks to Monroe’s unforgettable dress. What do you think?
