Johnny Depp is getting back on track professionally! The star has just signed a multi-year, seven-figure deal with Dior to continue serving as the brand ambassador of the fashion brand’s bestselling cologne, Sauvage.
The deal comes in the wake of his recent win against ex-wife Amber Heard in the infamous $50 million defamation lawsuit. Read on to know the complete details of the contract.
Dior features Depp on its Official Instagram Page
On Monday, the official Instagram page of Dior posted some photos and videos of Depp from backstage at one of his shows in Paris. The caption on the post read, “Backstage at @olympiahall before the last show. Fearless yet human, just like Sauvage.”
The photos were clicked by famous photographer Greg Williams. It is being said that the deal came through when Williams and the Top management of Dior attended one of Depp and Jeff Beck’s rock concert in Paris.
Sources say that a photoshoot took place before and after the concert, with Williams behind the lens. The content from it will be used for Dior’s new ad campaign. Ever since Dior posted the photos, fans have been appreciating the brand for supporting Johnny.
While one fan wrote, “I’m so proud of you John and thank you DIOR,” another one commented, “Favourite actor and favourite cologne 🙌”. Another fan wrote, “When the truth is revealed, the blackness of darkness tries to block the light, but the light always wins the field. Johnny Depp wins.”
Dior First Signed Johnny in 2015
Johnny was signed by Dior as the celebrity face of Sauvage cologne back in 2015. Ever since Depp came on board, Sauvage has become the top-selling fragrance in the world, surpassing successful women’s scents from Chanel and other top brands, according to Business of Fashion.
In 2020, when Jonny was dropped from most of his projects after losing the libel case against The Sun in the UK, Dior still decided to stick by him and retained their contract. The brand’s strategy did seem to pay off as many fans went on to buy Sauvage cologne on sites like Sephora and Ulta as a show of support during the legal proceedings.
However, the Sauvage commercial had stopped airing on TV after Amber’s allegations against him. After he scored a courtroom victory against Amber in the defamation lawsuit in June, the original advertisement started airing again in primetime on Fox.
Sauvage Ad Featuring Johnny Sparked Controversy in 2019
Johnny and Dior also met with controversy during their partnership. In 2019, the French luxury brand faced widespread backlash on social media for an ad campaign for Sauvage that featured Johnny. The campaign, named ‘We are the Land’, showed imagery related to the Native American culture, including people dancing to the beat of drums.
People accused the fashion and beauty brand of racism and cultural appropriation. The company had reportedly consulted with Native Americans while coming up with the ads. The ad eventually had to be removed by the brand from all platforms.
Now that Johnny is free of legal trouble, we can surely expect to see him in more projects. Stay tuned for more news and updates.
