Who is Alisher Usmanov? UK Imposes Sanctions on Billionaire Businessman

Alisher Burkhanovich Usmanov is an Uzbek-born Russian business tycoon and oligarch. Usmanov generated most of his wealth after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.

Metal and mining operations and investments contributed to the majority of his wealth. According to Bloomberg, his estimated net worth is $19.5 billion as of 2022.

Sanctions imposed by EU/UK

Alisher Usmanov is in the news as the EU has placed him on its sanctions list which named him as “one of Vladimir Putin’s favorite oligarchs”.

He was also added to the UK list of sanctions on 3rd March which implies that his assets in the UK or the EU will be frozen including his lavish UK real estate portfolio. He can neither sell, mortgage nor rent out his properties.

UK’s Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said, “Our message to Putin and his allies has been clear from day one – invading Ukraine would have serious and crippling economic consequences. Sanctioning Usmanov and Shuvalov sends a clear message that we will hit oligarchs and individuals closely associated with the Putin regime and his barbarous war. We won’t stop here. Our aim is to cripple the Russian economy and starve Putin’s war machine.”

According to Forbes Magazine Usmanov’s $600m superyacht Dilbar, which is one of the largest in the world by gross tonnage, was reported to be seized by German authorities from a Hamburg shipyard on 2nd March.
