Hollywood actor Robert Downey JR. is geared up to work on his next project which would be an adaptation of Vietnamese American author Viet Thanh Nguyen’s best-selling novel ‘The Sympathizer’.
Robert Downey will be seen not just as an actor in this upcoming drama series but will also take on the role of a producer for this HBO’s adaptation. After the Avengers: Endgame, this series would be the first big project of the actor.

This upcoming series will be helmed by Park Chan-wook as per a report from Variety. He along with Don McKellar will be serving as co-showrunner for the drama series. Park Chan-wook has earlier directed films like Old Boy (2003) and The Handmaiden (2016). The drama series is said to be a high-budget one and will be co-produced by HBO, A24, Rhombus Media in association with Cinetic Media and Moho Film.
The lead actor of the show is not yet finalized and the makers are trying to find out the perfect fit to take the lead actor’s role. However, the other cast is said to mostly include Vietnamese. The shooting of the drama series will be done in Los Angeles and in Vietnam.
The star actor Robert Downey apart from being the executive producer of the series will also be portraying multiple supporting roles in the drama series. All of these roles will be constituting different arms of the American establishment. There were also be antagonists like CIA operative, Orange County Congressman, and a Hollywood film director in the drama series.
Robert Downey stated, “Adapting Mr. Nguyen’s important and masterful work requires a visionary team. With Director Park at the helm, I expect this to be a creative producing adventure for Susan, me, and Team Downey, and a stimulating process for myself in playing these complex supporting roles.” He further said, “A24 and HBO are the perfect combination of partners and co-parents… It’s exactly the type of challenge I’ve been craving, and I believe we will deliver an exceptional viewing experience to our audience.”

The Sympathizer is the debut novel written by Vietnamese American professor Viet Thanh Nguyen. This novel received the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2016. This 2015 novel which is described as a cross-culture satire is all about “the struggles of a half-French, half-Vietnamese communist spy during the final days of the Vietnam War and his resulting exile in the United States.” The series’s plot would also revolve around the same.
The actor became a household name as Tony Stark or Iron Man in ‘Avengers: Endgame’. His other popular roles include Charlie Bartlett, Sherlock Holmes, Zodiac, Iron Man among others.
