Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Adopt A Rescue Dog

Meghan Markle, former actress and the Duchess of Sussex and Prince Harry have led a very public life, maybe more so since the couple  let go of their official duties and moved to the USA with his family.

The royal couple is in the news again, although it is more of a positive than negative news this time around. The happy couple along with their two kids have adopted a 7-year-old beagle. The beagle, named Momma Mia, was adopted on August 11th.

She was one of the 4,000 beagles that were rescued from a breeding center in Virginia. The breeding facility was found to be in violation of safety measures to ensure a safe environment for the puppies. This news was revealed by Shannon Keith, the president and founder of the Beagle Freedom Project.

Adopting a Rescue Beagle

The Duchess is known to be an animal lover. She already has a rescue named Guy. She does her part in trying to bring extra attention to the captivated animals and helping them find a forever home.

Ms. Keith received a call from ‘Meghan Markle out of the blue’. Markle said on the call that she had been a supporter of the organization for a while and that the couple was interested in adopting a dog.

Luckily, Ms. Keith had a mother and litter coming into the organization soon and she informed Markle of the same. The Duchess immediately showed interest in adopting the mother. People usually want to adopt puppies but the couple really wanted to help the canine that needed it the most.

The mother of the litter, Mia, was used all her life as a breeder. After reports of mistreatment, she along with 4,000 other doggies was rescued from the Envigo breeding facility in Cumberland, Va.

The rescue operation has been going on for a while, it started in July after the US authorities filed a complaint and the inspectors found several violations of federal regulations at the facility. Apart from using the dogs to breed repeatedly, many of them were to be used for testing and research too.

Adjusting With The Royal Family

The doggo adjusted with the royal family right away. Ms. Keith, who is also an animal rights lawyer, said, “The second they walked in, it’s like Momma Mia knew,” she said. “She ran over to them.” Not only that, “Her tail was wagging a million miles a minute.”

The canines that were rescued from the breeding facility had never played with any toys, nor did they get enough exposure to humans to be comfortable around them. Many of the rescued dogs and puppies were alarmed and scared by the TV sounds or even squeaky toys.

The rescue workers and volunteers are doing all they can to rehabilitate them into loving homes.

Ms. Keith said that when the royal family came to pick up Mia, “It’s like she knew that was her new home.” She also added “They were just so loving towards her.”

Not many people know this but certain branches of the royal family commit often commit to a certain type of dog breed. For example, Queen Elizabeth has been photographed with her corgis for years. Likewise, Prince Charles and Camilla have Jack Russell terriers.
