Meet Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez as Elon Musk Tells Her, “Stop Hitting on Me”

American politician and activist, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez rebuked billionaires in her tweet today in an apparent reference to Tesla CEO, Elon Musk.

Even though she did not name anyone in her tweet but fellow social media users were quick to decode her tweet.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez also known by her initials AOC, tweeted, “Tired of having to collectively stress about what explosion of hate crimes is happening bc some billionaire with an ego problem unilaterally controls a massive communication platform and skews it because Tucker Carlson or Peter Thiel took him to dinner and made him feel special”.

Elon Musk gave a quick rebuttal to her in a tweet, teasing the US lawmaker by saying, “Stop hitting on me, I’m really shy”. Ocasio-Cortez responded, “I was talking about Zuckerberg but ok.”

AOC, a member of the Democratic party is serving as the U.S. representative for New York’s 14th congressional district which includes the eastern part of the Bronx, portions of north-central Queens, and Rikers Island in New York City.

Ocasio-Cortez became very popular at a national level when she emerged victorious in the Democratic Party’s primary election for New York’s 14th congressional district by defeating Democratic Caucus Chair Joe Crowley. She became the youngest woman ever to serve in the United States Congress at the age of 29.

Early life

Ocasio-Cortez was born in the year 1989 in New York City. She studied at Yorktown High School and completed her graduation in 2007. She later attended Boston University and graduated cum laude by receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in international relations and economics in the year 2011.

While she was in college, Ocasio-Cortez became an intern for U.S. Senator Ted Kennedy in his section on foreign affairs and immigration issues.

Early Career & Elections

Ocasio-Cortez’s initial job was as a bartender and waitress in the Bronx. Then she launched Brook Avenue Press which is now a defunct publishing firm for books. She was also part of the nonprofit National Hispanic Institute. She was also an organizer for Bernie Sanders’s presidential campaign in 2016.

She took inspiration for her congressional campaign logo from “revolutionary posters and visuals from the past”. Ocasio-Cortez started her campaign in the year 2017. She told Bon Appétit, “For 80 percent of this campaign, I operated out of a paper grocery bag hidden behind that bar”.

She happened to be the first person since 2004 to stand against Joe Crowley in the primary. Ocasio-Cortez who had a disadvantage of funds shortage said, “You can’t really beat big money with more money. You have to beat them with a totally different game.” Her campaign has gone with grassroots mobilization rather than taking monetary help from corporations.

Ocasio-Cortez took office at just 29 making her the youngest woman ever to serve the United States Congress. She is also the youngest member of the 116th Congress.

Awards and Honors

Asteroid 23238 was given the name Ocasio-Cortez by the MIT Lincoln Laboratory in her honor when she finished second in Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in 2007.

Ernesto Nieto honored Ocasio-Cortez with the 2017 National Hispanic Institute Person of the Year. She has been the recipient of the Adelle Foley Award in 2019. She also made it to the list of the 2019 BBC 100 Women.
