Lynda Carter the Wonder Woman Actress Discusses the Character’s LGBTQIA+ Status

The Wonder Woman star Lynda Carter is defending the superhero character as a queer icon during Pride Month. Happy Pride! So excited to celebrate with all my LGBTQIA+ friends and fans,” the actress posted on Twitter. Still, it did startle some backlash from homophonic fans who said Wonder Woman has no business being involved with gay rights, non-genders, pronouns and anything else against our Lord.”

Wonder Women’s Character as a Queer Icon

The post by the actress initiated a debate online and a few of the fans posted that even if the movies and the TV shows have not displayed Wonder Woman’s character as queer explicitly but the DC Comics Wonder Woman author Greg Rucka confirmed back in 2016 that “Princess Diana of Themyscira is queer.”

Carter who was in the recent ‘Wonder Woman’ movies alongside Gal Gadot defended the character she played in the 1970s Television series “I didn’t write Wonder Woman, but if you want to argue that she is somehow not a queer or trans icon, then you’re not paying attention,” she tweeted.

The actress even shared her personal experience with the fans who felt the same about the character “Every time someone comes up to me and says that WW helped them while they were closeted, it reminds me how special the role is.”

Carter and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman

Carter has brought the DC superhero to life in the series of WOnder WOman from 1975 to 1979 and since then she reappeared in the superhero realm by featuring in 2016’s Supergirl. Post that Gal Gadot has taken up the iconic role of Wonder Woman in both the movies Wonder Woman and Wonder Woman 1984 and another one is on its way.

The Starting of the Argument

The 70-year-old actress posted a series of tweets on the advent of the pride month claiming that Diana Prince who is popularly known as the Wonder Woman was in fact an icon of queerness.

Her tweet featured an art cover of the character surrounded by the rainbow background stating  “Happy Pride!” she wrote. “So excited to celebrate with all my LGBTQIA+ friends and fans 🏳️‍🌈 Art by Paulina Ganucheau for
@DCComics ✨.” and this is where the tweets started flowing. One of the trolls said that “Wonder Woman IS NOT A SUPER HERO FOR GAYS!” and Carter responded to that by claiming You’re right. She’s a superhero for bisexuals!”

Further the actress shared the above picture of herself as a young buck featuring a fight pose and she amusingly stated that she  “loves seeing all the love from LGBTQ+ fans today! Now here’s one I call the ‘ready to fight your homophobic relatives’ pose. Just kidding. (Or am I?) Haha! 😘.”

With being Lynda Carter always being an ally on and off-screen when it comes to the iconic character of OWnder Women she is even said to reprise her role as Asteria in Wonder Woman 3 after she made a remarkable comeback in the 2020’s “Wonder Woman 1984”
