Taking to her Instagram account on 28th July she posted, “I just heard the record everyone is saying has my sample. But it’s beyond this song at this point. This was a TRIGGER for me. Milkshake alone is one of the most licensed records of our generation. I am a creator, I’m an innovator, I have done more than left my mark on an era of music and style that will go down in history.”

Early Life and Education

Kelis Rogers was born in the year 1979 in the Harlem neighborhood of Manhattan. She entered the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music, Art, and Performing Arts in New York at the age of 14 where she learned to play the saxophone and gained membership in the Girls Choir of Harlem.

Before finishing high school, Kelis worked as a bartender and a salesperson at a clothes store. The Neptunes were then introduced to Kelis via a friend (Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo)

Following her high school graduation in 1997, Kelis had a variety of jobs before being hired as a backup vocalist for the American hip hop group Gravediggaz’s album track “Fairytalez.

Music Career

Kelis’ debut studio album, Kaleidoscope, was made available through Virgin Records. Her first album received a gold certification and peaked at number 43 in the UK. She later quit Virgin Records.

She has worked with pop and rock performers Enrique Iglesias and No Doubt, R&B and hip-hop artists Busta Rhymes and Clipse, electronic and dance producers Calvin Harris, Timo Maas, and Richard X, as well as independent and alternative bands Björk and Dave Sitek.

She has sold more than six million records worldwide. In 2020, Netflix released the culinary competition series Cooked with Cannabis featuring Kelis.

Kelis was nominated 30 times for several prestigious awards like Antville Music Video Awards, Billboard Music Awards, Brit Awards, DanceStar USA Awards, MTV Europe Music Awards, Music Television Awards, MVPA Awards, Soul Train Music Awards, Q Awards, NME Awards, and Grammy Awards among others under different categories.

She was nominated for Best Urban/Alternative Performance for the song “Milkshake” in 2004 and Best Contemporary R&B Album for her fourth album “Kelis Was Here” in 2007 for a Grammy Award. Kelis won 9 awards for her work in Acapella, Flesh Tone, and Caught Out There.
