…And we thought, Johnny Depp, has moved on from the ugly defamation trial that ended six-long weeks. Well, the “Pirates Of The Caribbean Star” is certainly not done fighting his ex in court and has filed a notice to appeal the jury’s $ 2 million award to Amber Heard. Guess, what Johnny has good reasons to go for this appeal. Read on to learn more about this development.
Johnny Depp Has Reasons To Appeal…
As per the recent court documents, Johhny Depp filed a notice of appeal seeking to overturn the $2 million verdict awarded to the “Aquaman” star, a single count of defamation thatAmber Heard won at their bombshell trial last month.
Well, Johnny Depp and his legal team have strong reasons to go for this appeal. Even though the previous Virginia court verdict speaks loud and clear about Johnny’s innocence, Amber Heard has no intentions to adhere to the verdict and plants on to pursue further litigation. To clarify the situation, Johnny’s legal representatives stated:
“This was an overwhelmingly positive verdict for Mr Depp. The verdict speaks for itself, and Mr Depp believes that this is a time for both parties to move on with their lives and heal. But if Ms Heard is determined to pursue further litigation by appealing the verdict, Mr Depp is filing a concurrent appeal to ensure that the full record and all relevant legal issues are considered by the Court of Appeal.”
If you’re not aware, Johnny is not the first one to hit. His new filing comes just one day after his ex had filed her own appeal of the $10.35 million verdict Depp was awarded over claims he was defamed by an op-ed article in which Heard made claims of domestic abuse. So yea, one major reason for the counter-appeal is to ensure the record includes his side and that all the legal issues are considered by the appeals court.
Recalling The Previous Verdict…
Johnny Depp originally sued Heard for $50 million for a Washington Post op-ed wherein his lawyers argued that it was a clear reference to her allegations that he abused her during their 2016 split.
On the other hand, Heard countersued Depp for $100 million, claiming that the “Aquaman” star was defamed when Depp’s lawyer Adam Waldman made public statements calling her allegations a hoax. Moreover, she alleged Johnny of several things, which he had never done to her.
After a lengthy trial of six weeks, the jury finally awarded Depp $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages, but the amount was reduced since Virginia caps punitive damages at $350,000. However, Amber was awarded $2 million on just one of her defamation claims.
Overall, the verdict came as a victory for Johnny Depp who was finally able to come back to his life. Hollywood once again opened its doors which were shut due to Amber’s false allegations. This trial witnessed a worldwide audience. Well, things aren’t over it!
What do you think about the counter-appeal? I am positive that Amber’s appeal would, either be dismissed or she’d suffer another defeat at the hands of Johnny’s legal team. What do you suggest?
