Is Mila Kunis from Ukraine? She opens up on her Ukrainian Roots and Russian Invasion

Milena Markovna Kunis is an American actress famous for portraying Rachel in the romantic comedy film “Forgetting Sarah Marshall”.

She gained further recognition for her acting skills in the psychological thriller “Black Swan” released in the year 2010, for which she bagged the Marcello Mastroianni Award under the Best Young Actor or Actress category.

Mila Kunis and her husband Ashton Kutcher have raised approximately $20 million in funds to support humanitarian efforts in Ukraine.

She now speaks on her Ukrainian roots and the heartbreaking invasion of Ukraine by Russia. Kunis uploaded a candid interview with Maria Shriver on YouTube on 11th March.

Mila Kunis opens up on why she used to say she was Russian

Kunis said that being Ukrainian was irrelevant to her as she identifies so strongly as an American. She still has close acquaintances in Ukraine and used to visit Ukraine frequently along with her family and husband.

She was recently featured in an interview on Maria Shriver’s channel.

She said, “But if I was like, ‘I’m from Russia,’ people were like, ‘Oh, we know that country.’ So I was like, great, I’ll just tell people from Russia. One of them being when I came to the States and I would tell people I’m from Ukraine, the first question I’d get was, ‘Where is Ukraine?”

Sharing her emotional response seeing the ongoing deadly conflict between her home country and Russia, Kunis shared of her friend’s family.

She said, “They refuse to evacuate, And they all go to work every day. So they’re in their bomb shelter at night, they wake up in the morning, they take whatever they have to protect themselves in the city, and they go to their office to continue working. It is a different breed of people”.

Milena Markovna Kunis was born in the year 1983 in Chernivtsi, Ukraine. Her parents migrated to Los Angeles, California when she was just 7 years old. Her mother tongue is Russian and is also the common language within her family.

Kunis hails from a Jewish family and has mentioned antisemitism in the then Soviet Union as one of the many reasons that forced her family to relocate to the United States. She attended Hubert Howe Bancroft Middle School in Los Angeles. She attended Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies (LACES) for a short period however she later moved to Fairfax High School.

She completed her graduation in 2001 and then attended the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). She disclosed that her ethnicity is 96% Ashkenazi Jewish in 2017.

Acting Career

She starter her career in acting at the age of nine when her father enrolled her in acting classes at the Beverly Hills Studios. On her debut audition, she landed the role for a Barbie commercial. She first appeared on TV in the daytime soap opera “Days of Our Lives” in 1994.

She made her transition to films in 2001 after featuring in “Get Over It” starring opposite Kirsten Dunst. She featured in several films like Max Payne (2008) and The Book of Eli (2010), the romantic comedy Friends with Benefits (2011), Oz the Great and Powerful (2013), the comedies Ted (2012), Bad Moms (2016) and A Bad Moms Christmas (2017).

She received several awards and nominations in her professional career spanning more than two decades.

She used to casually tell people in the US that she is from Russia as many were unaware of where Ukraine is. She often used to explain where is Ukraine on the world map.
