Is Mail Running and Delivered on New Year’s Eve and Day?

Do you have an important package on the way from an acquaintance or a loved one? Or have you sent a mail recently to someone? Or maybe are you planning to send one now?

Or maybe you just came here by accident.

Well, in any case, you might be wondering if the mail will be running this time of the year on 31st December and 1st January.

Most of us consider new year’s eve and new year’s day as a holiday. But that does not mean it is considered an official holiday everywhere. Some places still remain open and people go to work.

Let us see if the mail services are one of those places.

Can I Send or Receive a Mail on New Year’s Eve?

New year’s eve is not a federal holiday. It means that although some places might be closed or working on short hours, the federal places will remain open.

And postal services are one of the federal businesses. So mail services are usually up and running on New Year’s Eve.

But here’s the catch, the 1st of January is a federal holiday but since it falls on a Saturday next year, the AS US postal services will remain closed on the 31st too. So you will have to wait.

However, USPS and FedEx will be open on new year’s eve and mail will be collected and received.

Will Mail Services Run on New Year’s Day?

1st of January, New Year’s Day is one of the very few days when postal offices take a break. New Year’s Day is a federal holiday and all federal offices remain closed that day.

Plus 1st January falls on Saturday, a weekend so you gotta wait for the day to pass if you have to send or receive a mail.

So no mail will be collected on January 1 from the mailboxes and the postal services will resume on January 3, 2022.

However, if you are still in a state of urgency, then you can take a sigh of relief as Priority Mail Express will be delivering mails even on New Year’s Day.

For more information, the following is a list of postal holidays to be observed in the US in 2022:

  • New Year’s Day: January 1
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day: January 18
  • Presidents’ Day / Washington Birthday: February 15
  • Memorial Day: May 31
  • Independence Day: July 5 (observed, since July 4 falls on a Sunday)
  • Labor Day: September 6
  • Columbus Day: October 11
  • Veterans Day: November 11
  • Thanksgiving: November 25
  • Christmas is on the 25th of December

So use this information before you consider sending a mail. And it is suggested that you confirm with your local postal office just to be on the safe side before you plan a mail. Happy Holidays!
