The New Year’s Eve Ball Drop is a prominent New Year celebration where a time ball known as Times Square Ball is located on the roof of One Times Square. This ball then descends down a specially designed flagpole at 11:59:00 PM ET, and the New Year starts by the time it rests.

The Times Square Ball is covered with 2,688 Waterford Crystal triangles of different sizes and has a weight of 11,875 pounds. This tradition has been in existence since 1907, and it was first organized by Adolph Ochs, owner of The New York Times newspaper.

The New Year’s Eve Ball Drop ceremony is preceded by live entertainment including performances by musicians. This year, KT Tunstall, Karol G, and Journey are set to perform, followed by certain other group performances.

This year, it is possible to attend the New Year’s Eve Ball Drop in person as the NYC Mayor, Bill de Blasio, has said that the outdoor event will return but with limited attendance. Only 15,000 masked and fully vaccinated individuals will be able to visit Times Square to attend the event.

Usually, more than 58,000 people visit Times Square every year, except for 2020, when the event was wholly virtual. If you want to attend the Ball Drop live, in person, this time, you have to reach the closest subway stop- Times Square 42nd Street.

You can also get off at a nearby station and walk towards the destination if you wish to avoid the crowd. The entry points are located at Sixth Avenue and Eighth Avenue between 38th and 56th Streets.

The attendees can enter the venue after 3 PM ET (much later than usual times), and the event will kick off at 6 PM ET with the famous Ball Drop happening at midnight.

What Covid Safety Precautions are Mandatory to Attend it?

With the cases of Covid 19, especially of the Omicron variant, in surge lately, special measures are taken for the Times Square Ball Drop. All attendees above the age of 5 must be fully vaccinated to enter the venue. The children under the age of 5 must arrive with a fully vaccinated adult.

Everyone has to strictly wear a mask, follow proper sanitization, and maintain standard social distancing. The officials will also restrict the viewing areas to carry a limited of attendees in each section. Everyone also has to carry valid photo identification with them.

On ABC, you can tune in to Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2022. Liza Koshy, Jessie James Decker, Billy Porter, D-Nice, Ciara, Daddy Yankee, and Roselyn Sanchez will cohost the 50th edition of this broadcast this year. The live telecast will begin at 8 PM ET (also available on ABC Live).

On NBC, you can tune in to Miley’s New Year’s Eve Party co-hosted by Miley Cyrus and Pete Davidson. It airs on NBC and NBC App from 10 to 11 PM and 11:30 PM to 12:30 AM ET.

On CNN, you can tune in to New Year’s Eve Live with Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen. It will air on CNN and CNNgo at 8 PM ET. For the fifth year straight, these two will welcome the New Year.

Earlier, FOX also had plans to welcome the New Year 2022 with Ken Jeong and Joel McHale, but they canceled it on December 22 due to fear of the Covid 19 Omicron variant’s mass spread. The alternative programming will now take place during New Year’s Eve.
