Parag Agrawal: Education
37-year-old Parag Agrawal hails from India. As per his LinkedIn Bio, he completed his Bachelor’s Degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, in Computer Science.
Later he relocated to the US in 2005 to complete a doctorate in Computer Science from Stanford University, California.
Parag Agrawal: Career
During his Ph.D., Parag held different leadership positions at multinational companies like Microsoft Research, Yahoo! Research, and AT&T Labs.
In 2011, Parag Agrawal joined social media giant, Twitter as ‘Distinguished Software Engineer’. Six years later, he was promoted to CTO of the company.
He was head of strategy involving AI (artificial intelligence) and ML (machine learning). He has led many projects in his tenure to ensure Twitter users get relevant tweets on their respective timelines.
Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey made an announcement in December 2019 that Parag Agrawal will be the head of Project Bluesky. He said, “an independent team of open source architects, engineers, and designers to develop an open and decentralized standard for social media that would help better control abusive and misleading information on its platform”.
In an interview given to MIT Technology Review last year in November 2020, Agrawal said about his views on the protection of free speech. He said, “Our role is not to be bound by the First Amendment, but our role is to serve a healthy public conversation … focus less on thinking about free speech, but thinking about how the times have changed”.
Parag Agrawal: Personal life
Parag Agrawal is married to Vineeta Agrawal. Vineeta works at venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz as a general partner. The couple has one son.
Parag’s future at Twitter will be challenging as Twitter has set aggressive goals for the next few years for growth. Twitter has set a goal to have 315 million monetizable daily active users in the next two years and achieve 100% growth in revenue by the end of 2023.
Parag joins the growing list of Indians like Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, Shantanu Narayen, CEO of Adobe, and Satya Nadella, Microsoft CEO, etc who are leading the US tech companies.
