Early life and Education

Ernest came from an Italian immigrants family. His parents, Anna and Camillo Borgnino were parted briefly for two years. The little toddler lived with his mother in Italy, before they reunited in 1923.

He completed his Highschool graduation from James Hillhouse High School and enjoyed sports and had no interest in acting. Ernest then served United State Navy from 1935 to 1941, but reenlisted in the Navy after the attack on Pearl Harbor. There he spent his next ten years and graded to Gunner’s mate first class. He earned several military Awards including World War II Victory Medal.

His Acting Career

After his discharge from the military, he moved back with his parents to Connecticut and worked at a local factory for a short period. Later his mother motivated him to pursue a glamorous profession in Entertainment Industry. Ernest joined Randall School of Drama and then moved to Virginia to join the Barter Theatre.

In 1949, he managed to land his first stage role in the State of the Union. From that point onwards he didn’t look back. Using his appearance to his advantage, Ernest made his debut in the Film industry with The Whistle at Eaton Falls in 1951. He got his first big break in Columbia’s From Here to Eternity, starring as the sadistic Sergeant “Fatso” Judson.

Personal Life

The voiceover actor of SpongeBob SquarePants was married fives times in his life. Ernest married Rhoda Kemins in 1949 and had a daughter, Nancee, but the pair split up in 1958.

Just a year later he tied knots with actress Katy Jurado from 1959 to 1963. A man with his heart on sleeves and free-spirited, he married singer Ethel Merman in the following year for mere 42 days. Ernest then married Donna Rancourt after finalizing his third divorcee in 1965. He and Donna together had three kids, Christopher, Sharon, and Diana.

He then met his 4-decades long partner Tova Traesnaes on a blind date set up by his friend Marty Allen. Ernest and Tova married each other in 1973 and lived together until his death in July of 2012.
