Eddie Murphy, who was honored with the Cecil B. DeMille Award for career achievement at the 2023 Golden Globe Awards on Tuesday (Jan. 10) night, poked fun at the infamous Oscar scandal while receiving the honour. If you aren’t aware, the Cecil B. DeMille Award is an honorary Golden Globe Award given by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) for “outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment”.
During his heartfelt speech, the 61-year-old stand-up comedian spiced up things by adding some Will Smith flavour to his words. He referenced the infamous Oscar scandal where Will Smith slapped Chris Rock for cracking a joke on his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.
“I’ve been in show business for 46 years, and I’ve been in the movie business for 41 years, so this has been a long time in the making and greatly appreciated,” Murphy was heard saying at the end of his speech while receiving the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the Beverly Hilton.
He continued, “I’ve been doing this for a long time so I could literally stand up here and keep saying names until they play the piano, but I’m gonna wrap it up and just say something to all the new up-and-coming dreamers and artists that are in the room tonight. I wanna let you know that there is a definitive blueprint that you can follow to achieve success, prosperity, longevity and peace of mind.”
At one point, Eddie revealed a blueprint that he followed all his life. He said, “It’s a blueprint and I’ve followed it my whole career. It’s very simple, just do these three things: pay your taxes, mind your business and keep Will Smith’s wife’s name out of your f—ing mouth!” Well, who’d want to get slapped again by Will?
The Infamous Oscar Scandal…
As you can recall, Will Smith slapped comedian Chris Rock when he cracked a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith who was sitting next to her husband Will Smith during the 2022 Oscars. Smith ran on stage and slapped Rock. He yelled, “Keep my wife’s name out of your f**king mouth!”.
After a few moments, Will Smith won the Oscar for best actor category for his role in the “King Richard” movie. While receiving the award, Smith has tears in his eyes. In his speech, he apologized to the Academy and his fellow nominees for his reaction however he did not address Rock.
Well, Eddie Murphy wasn’t the only person to have poked fun at Will Smith, who wasn’t present at the ceremony. Comedian Jerrod Carmichael, who is the host of the 80th edition of the Golden Globe Awards, didn’t hesitate to roast Will Smith for the infamous Oscar slap.
Jerrod said, “While we were on commercial, we actually presented Will Smith with the Rock Hudson award for best portrayal of masculinity on television, so please give it up for Will Smith. Please! Please!” The joke resulted in fainted applause from the audience.
Since the scandal, Will Smith has maintained a relatively low profile. He has even undergone therapy following his suspension from the Academy. From speculations about his divorce from his wife to posting for therapy in India, Will has been trying to cope with all the negativity surrounding the Oscar scandal. While jokes are jokes, let’s give this talented man a break! What do you think?
