YouTube just acquired the award-winning documentary “The Price of Free” featuring Nobel Peace Laureate Kailash Satyarthi. “The Price of Free” revolves around Satyarthi’s life-long mission to end child labor and trafficking. The documentary will debut for free on November 27.
“The Price of Free” tells the story of Satyarthi and how he left a lucrative career as an electrical engineer to develop the Bachpan Bachao Andolan (BBA) to rescue children in India from trafficking. Since then Satyarthi has rescued more than 87,000 children and established one of the largest civil society movements.
The Global March Against Child Labor demanded laws internationally on child labor and the 100 Million Campaign is a youth-driven call to action working to ensure that all children are free, safe and educated.
Shot with concealed body cameras and shaky hand-held cameras, “The Price of Free” comes off more as a Hollywood thriller than a documentary with it’s opening scene being a raid in a New Delhi factory. They follow the work of the BBA as they help innocent children return to their parents from being enslaved in factories. Satyarthi, his wife and children are all at the forefront of this movement. Satyarthi has seen violence, received death threats and even had watched colleagues killed by the mobs controlled by the big businesses enslaving children. A tireless global activist, his efforts inspired change, empowered students to speak up and policymakers in government to make changes to hold businesses accountable for his actions.
“This film shows the real scourge of child trafficking, child labor, slavery and exploitation that is ruining the childhood of millions and ruthlessly crushing their dreams,” Satyarthi said in a press release. “It shares stories of the most marginalized and vulnerable children that I have been fighting for all my life and will continue to. I call on everyone to watch this film and work with us in creating a world where all children are free, healthy, safe and educated – a world where every child is free to be a child. For, if any child is not free then none of us are free.”
By releasing this documentary on their platform, YouTube hopes to amplify the voice of Satyarthi and bring attention to his movement.
“We are incredibly inspired by the heroic work Kailash Satyarthi and his team do every day,” said Susanne Daniels, Global Head of Original Content, YouTube. “One of YouTube’s missions is to give everyone a voice – and so we are proud to feature such an important and educational documentary that not only gives these young children a voice but supports Kailash’s mission in giving them the childhood they rightly deserve.”
“The Price of Free” premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival and took home the U.S. Documentary Grand Jury Prize. The film is directed by Derek Donan, who followed Satyarthi for two years even going undercover on raids and rescue operations. The film is produced by Davis Guggenheim, the man behind “An Inconvenient Truth” and “He Named Me Malala.” Be sure to check it out on the SoulPancake YouTube channel when it debuts, Nov. 27.
