D.L. Hughley Fires Back at Mo’Nique’s Rant; What is the Beef Between The Two?

American comedian D.L. Hughley fired back at Mo’Nique for a rant directed at the 59-year-old comedian. The issue concerns a headlining disagreement concerning “The Comedy Explosion” in Detroit. Read on the learn more about this beef between the two famous comedians.

The Contractual Dispute…

The Academy Award winner Mo’Nique was a part of The Comedy Explosion featuring D.L. Hughley at the Fox Theater in Detroit. While on stage, the 54-year-old comedian who has also won a Grammy Award, went all the way in on Hugley because of an alleged contract dispute.

She claims that she was supposed to co-headline the event with Hughley, but it didn’t work out that way. Mo’Nique said on stage, “That’s what the motherfucking contract says, Mo’Nique is to be the last motherfucking person on the Goddamn stage. She is the headliner. That’s what I signed the contract for.” Monique Angela Hicks, who is known by the stage name Mo’Nique also labelled Hughley as a “bitch n***a.”

Not just this, other clips also surfaced on the internet wherein Mo’Nique crossed boundaries to abuse D.L. Hughley. She said, “What kind of real n*gga would ever attack a got d*mned black woman?” She said she feels sorry for his wife, then said, “N***a, your name is D.L., what the f**k does it stand for? How far are you bending over, n***a? On the DL.”

In another clip, Mo can be also heard calling D.L. a “coon” and a “b***h n***a” in a few clips that have surfaced online. She also posted on Instagram that “The fact that you point the people to the ticket stubs for the order of the names versus to your contract implies that you don’t have a contract that shows you are the headliner like I do. Either show your contract or be quiet.”

After warning him to stop messing with “people who once considered him a comrade in comedy,” Mo’Nique added, “But I thank you DL because you’re the reason why I fight for my people like I do. Anytime you opened for the King’s Of Comedy, and I was the headliner for the Queens of Comedy and you think you should close the show over me is a prime example of the bias that Black women have to deal with in this business. I won’t even discuss awards.”

D.L Hughley is Flaming Out…

D.L. Hughley, who was named as one of the “Big Four” comedians in The Original Kings of Comedy, responded to her insult in an Instagram post. He called back to all the other back and forths Mo’Nique has had throughout her career. He wrote:

“All you have to do is check the order of names on the ticket stub from last night and you’ll see who’s confused. Against my better judgment, over the objections of my team and 4 other occasions where I said NO, I decided to take a chance and work with Monique.

Oprah was the problem, Tyler Perry was the problem, Charlamagne was the problem, Steve Harvey was the problem, Lee Daniels was the problem, Netflix was the problem… Now it’s MY turn. At some point it can’t be everyone else, IT’S YOU!! Lesson learned. I didn’t have anything personal against Monique… People paid a lot of money to laugh, not hear about your contract. Apparently, the role you played in PRECIOUS turned out to be an autobiography. I wonder who’s next…”

This is not the first time that the stand-up comedian who has received other awards like the BAFTA Award, Golden Globe Award and Screen Actors Guild Award, and Grammy Award, came after someone. She is known for her long-standing beef with filmmaker Lee Daniels, which has now ended.

Apart from this,  in 2019, she sued Netflix for a discriminatory low-ball offer and ended with a blacklisting act of retaliation.” In the suit, she listed fellow comedians who were paid millions for their specials, including Chappelle, Rock, Jerry Seinfeld, Eddie Murphy, Ellen DeGeneres, and Ricky Gervais. Do you think Mo’Nique’s actions are justified?
