China Will Not Broadcast Oscars for Second Year in a Row

For the second time in a row, China will not be airing the Oscars ceremony anywhere in the country. The decision comes as the Chinese broadcasters forego the chance to show its people, who make up the world’s largest theatrical release, one of the most renowned award ceremonies in the world.

Before It Got Banned In China

The ceremony will start on Saturday night in Los Angeles, but due to the time difference, it would be around Monday morning in China.

Before the ceremony got banned in China last year, it used to be televised live in China by 1905.com. It is the online viewing platform for CCTV6, which is also a dedicated movie channel. Earlier, an edited version of the awards would be broadcasted on the channel during Monday’s primetime.

Why Is Oscar’s Ceremony Banned In China?

Last year was the first time that China and Hong Kong refused to air the awards show. This came as a surprise as it was never stopped from airing before. Even then, China did not care to express the reason behind banning the show. However, Hong Kong’s broadcaster TVB insisted that it was for commercial reasons only, although that might not be the case.

Many people speculate that the ban happened after Do Not Split, a movie about Hong Kong’s pro-democracy protests was nominated for the best short documentary award. The director of the movie was Chinese filmmaker Chloe Zhao.

There was major outrage in China after she made a critical comment saying that her homeland was unearthed. Although it was an old interview, it seemed like a big enough reason for China to ban Oscars last year and also this year.

Other Things That China Has Banned

Although Oscars being banned may come as a surprise to some, it is not the first thing that China has banned. Although China is one of the most-visited countries in the world with a rich culture, it does not tolerate anything that goes against its ideologies.

China banned some of the most popular games in the world like Mortal Kombat and Resident Evil. Any games that may show the Chinese government in poor light are also banned. This is why some games like PUBG was taken down by Tencent and a replacement game was created just for the Chinese players.

Also, some random popular TV shows like The Big Bang Theory and The Good Wife were banned in China. This decision was also not explained even as the fans of the shows were outraged.

China even banned Justin Bieber from performing in the country again due to his ‘disrespectful antics.’ Chinese officials took offence to Bieber being carried up the Great Wall by his bodyguards. Brad Pitt and Selena Gomez were some other celebrities who got banned in China due to their work or comments.

China no longer hesitates in banning people or shows from the country. The concerning part is the reason is not even explained to the country’s people. Although Oscars has been banned for two years now, it will be interesting to see when this particular ban is lifted.
