How To Get Married in Skyrim?

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is an action RPG open-world game released by Bethesda Game Studios. It was initially released in 2011 for PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360, and is set in the fantasy world of Tamriel. The game is set in the province of Skyrim, where the player character is a Dragonborn, a person with the ability to absorb the souls of dragons and use their power as their own.

The game has received widespread critical acclaim for its expansive open world, immersive gameplay, and rich storytelling. The Elder Scrolls series of games have quite a fascinating tale and gamers can still enjoy the games if they haven’t played the game yet. Bethesda also released a mobile version of the series named, The Elder Scrolls: Blades which is quite a popular game with over 5 Million downloads and counting.

One of the most talked about side-quests in the game, called “The Bonds of Matrimony” lets players actually get married in-game. This is quite unique to a video game and the entire process keeps things interesting for players. When you need a break from fighting demons and dragons, the side-quests in the game can come as a proper break. Getting married in the game has its own benefits and once you’re ready, this guide will come in handy.

Skyrim: First Step To Getting Married

The Bee and Barb

If you want to get married in Skyrim, you need to speak to Maramal in Riften. He will tell you about the Amulet of Mara, a holy symbol of the goddess of love that you can purchase from him for a small fee (200 coins) or find in random loot. Any Amulet of Mara will do, so if you have one before speaking to Maramal, there is no need to buy one. There are over 60 NPCs who can be your prospective spouse spread across the massive world of Skyrim.

To marry a character of your interest, you will need to do favors and complete quests for them. Once you have developed a good relationship with the NPC, you can propose marriage by wearing the amulet they gave you. If they agree, you will need to organize a wedding ceremony. Maramal will be pleased once you ask to get married and the wedding will take place the next day, from dawn until dusk.

The Wedding Ceremony

Temple of Mara

The ceremony itself is quite simple, and wouldn’t require a lot from players. Your bride-to-be will be waiting for you at the Temple of Mara. Once you enter the building with your fiancé, the first step in the ceremony would be an old tradition between the two of you. Maramal will prompt both you and your fiancé to say your vows.

Once the vows are exchanged, Maramal will pronounce you married and thus ends the wedding ceremony. As an officially married couple, the first hurdle to clear in the game is to decide upon a place to start living together. You can live at any house that you’ve purchased or live with your spouse. This decision can be changed later as well, by choosing the “I’d like us to move somewhere else.” dialog option.

Benefits Of Getting Married

Once you’re married, you will have the option to ask your spouse to prepare a home-cooked meal once a day. This meal is quite important to boost your Health Magic and Stamina by 25% for 10 minutes.

Another daily bonus named “Lover’s Comfort” is obtained by sleeping with your partner. This bonus boosts your learning speed by 15% for eight hours as long as you don’t have the Lover Stone activated. Finally, since the release of the Hearthstone DLC, you will also be able to build yourself a home where you can move in with your companion to further increase role-play options.

Skyrim: Best NPC To Get Married

Aela the Huntress, in Skyrim, is the best NPC to get married to in the game. She can be found in Jorrvaskr in Whiterun. To get her to be a prospective spouse, you must join The Companions guild and become a werewolf. Following this, you must then complete three Companions quests. These include the quests named Blood’s Honor, Purity of Revenge, and Glory of the Dead.

Once all three quests are completed and you have the Amulet of Mara, you can speak to Aela. Aela must be convinced once the quests are completed and you can proceed with the process of getting married to her. You can get free archery training from Aela if you manage to get married to her.

Other noteworthy partners include Vilkas who is an accomplished warrior and Benor who is quite a tough and confident fighter.

Skyrim: Known Bugs At Wedding Ceremony

Wedding Bugs

The Wedding might also fail if a Bandit Chief is among the guests attending the wedding. The Chief might start shooting guests at the wedding which will end up ruining your day and fail the quest, upsetting your fiancé. If you fail the quest, you must apologize to your fiancé enough times to convince them to get married to you, which might take a while.

Maramal might not be responsive when everything is ready to get started. Any attempt at speaking to him will result in a prompt that says he is busy. The only known solution to this bug is using the console command: “SetStage RelationshipMarriageWedding 100” which will trigger the next step and get Maramal to start the ceremony. You can get married the same day as you ask Maramal to get you married by asking post-midnight, or by re-entering the temple once more.

In this captivating game, the player is immersed in a finely crafted fictional world with content that constantly surprises. With many of the changes made since Oblivion, players are able to play more focused and intelligently, where decisions are effectively reflected. The Elder Scrolls series is well known for its freedom of choice, beautiful visuals, and stirring soundtrack, but Skyrim is a rare kind of intensely personal, deeply rewarding, and one of the best role-playing games ever released.

Skyrim also has a console that can be triggered using the tilde button on PC (~)  where players can use cheats to make things even more interesting. Comment down below if you found the game interesting or if you’re yet to try Skyrim.
