After a wait of almost four years, Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler returned to our screens as fan-favorite spies to solve another mystery. Murder Mystery 2, the sequel to the blockbuster Netflix film of 2019, dropped on the streaming platform on March 31.
Fans just don’t seem to get enough of the funny spy couple, as people who have watched Murder Mystery 2 are now already asking for another sequel in the franchise. But is Murder Mystery 3 in the works on Netflix? Read on to find out.
Will there be a Murder Mystery 3?
As of now, Netflix has not officially announced the third installment in the franchise. However, fans need not worry as Murder Mystery 2 was released just recently on the streaming platform, and the team will now look into the performance of the film to decide on its sequel.
The first film in the series came out in June 2019. During the first weekend, it reached over 30 million households, becoming the most-watched premiere for a Netflix original film at the time. In the first four weeks, the movie had clocked in over 73 million views.
The unprecedented success led to the sequel being announced four months later, in October 2019. Murder Mystery 2 is also expected to garner huge viewership numbers, and if it meets the targets set by Netflix, we can surely expect the announcement of the third film in the next few months.
When will Murder Mystery 3 Release on Netflix?
If the sequel gets green-lit in the upcoming month, we can expect it to arrive on Netflix in another year and a half. Murder Mystery 2 was announced in October 2019; however, work began on the film in September 2021 after delays due to the pandemic. The film made it to the screen on March 31, 2023.
If the same trend is followed, and considering that there would not be any delays this time, Murder Mystery 3 should be released on Netflix by late 2024. However, the date can only be confirmed once the streaming giant officially announces the sequel.
What will Murder Mystery 3 be About?
The makers have already teased how the story will unfold in a potential sequel at the end of Murder Mystery 2. [*Warning: Do not read ahead if you have not watched Murder Mystery 2 yet*] By the end of the film, Nick and Audrey are seen flying away in a private helicopter with $10 million cash.
However, the pilot of the helicopter grabs the bag of cash and jumps out, leaving the husband and wife alone in the middle of the air. They are now left with no money, and no pilot, which will possibly set the premise for Murder Mystery 3 if Netflix decides to go ahead with it.
As for the cast, the third installment will most probably mark the return of the lead pair and star Adam Sandler as Nick Spitz and Jennifer Aniston as Audrey Spitz. Other cast members who are expected to return include John Kani as Colonel Ulenga, Adeel Akhtar as Vik/The Maharajah, and Dany Boon as Inspector Delacroix.
Murder Mystery 1 and 2 are currently streaming on Netflix. Stay tuned for more news and updates.
