M3GAN, the latest sci-fi horror film, has been generating a lot of buzz ever since its release on January 6. The film has been loved by audiences and critics alike and is performing extremely well at the box office, despite stiff competition from Avatar: The Way of Water.
The performance of the film has led to talks around a potential sequel. Many fans want to see the continuation of the story of the artificially intelligent doll who develops self-awareness. So is there a sequel on the cards for M3GAN? Read on to find out.
Is M3GAN Sequel Happening?
Though there has been no official announcement of a sequel by Universal Pictures, reports suggest that the work on a second film based on M3GAN has already begun. The producers apparently want to turn the film into a horror franchise and have hinted at the same in their recent interviews.
James Wan, who has co-written and co-produced the film, has said that he wants to create a whole cinematic universe out of M3GAN. “What I will say to that is, in any of my movies, whether it’s The Conjuring Universe, or Saw, or Malignant, or M3GAN here, we like to think of a bigger world,” he said while teasing a sequel.
“For me, it’s about creating the world, and knowing who the characters are, where the story could potentially go, and then building this bigger world, and then going, ‘Okay, I’m telling this particular story, but I know other stuff that’s going on.’ So if we’re fortunate enough to have sequels, then we have an idea of where we want to go,” Wan added.
M3GAN 2 Potential Release Date
The filming of the first film took place in mid-2021. The production team then had to go through several reshoots to tone down the violence, and the film finally arrived in theatres on January 6, 2023. So overall, it took around one and a half years from shooting to release.
If the same trend is followed, and if the sequel is green-lit in the next few weeks, we can expect M3GAN 2 to release by the end of 2024 or the beginning of 2025. However, we will have to wait for an official announcement by Universal Pictures to confirm the release date.
What will M3GAN 2 be About?
Screenwriter Akela Cooper also signalled a potential sequel for the film and revealed that a much ‘gorier’ version of the project could be expected at some point. “No shade to Universal, love them, and I understand that once the trailer went viral, teenagers got involved and you want them to be able to see it,” Cooper said, talking about the film.
“There should be an unrated version at some point. I heard it is on the books. But yes, it was way gorier. Her body count in the script was higher than in the movie,” she said, hinting at M3GAN 2, and added, “I’m happy that I could have a hand in bringing back fun horror that doesn’t take itself so seriously.”
