Almost a decade after the inception of the John Wick film series, the highly-successful franchise is back with another installment, John Wick: Chapter 4. The film continues the adventures of the legendary hitman, played by Keanu Reeves.
The ending of JW4 has left audiences surprised, and a number of fans have already started asking for another film based on the assassin. But is John Wick: Chapter 5 in the works? Continue reading to find out.
Will there be a John Wick: Chapter 5?
Back in 2020, Lingsgate had announced that a fifth installment was being planned in the series, which was supposed to be shot simultaneously with Chapter 4. But the project was shelved in the summer of 2021. So as of now, there has been no development on John Wick: Chapter 5, and the producers have not announced the film either.
Director Chad Stahelski, who has helmed all four films till now, also revealed that he and Reeves were ‘done’ with John Wick for now. “In our minds, Keanu and I are done for the moment. We’re going to give John Wick a rest. I’m sure the studio has a plan. If everyone loves it and it goes kooky, then we’ll take a quiet minute,” he said before the premiere of JW4.
Meanwhile, Reeves had a different take and said that the future of the franchise would depend on the reaction of the audience. “You have to see how the audience responds to what we did,” the actor said in an interview last year.
“The only reason we’ve had a chance to make these movies is that people have liked what we have done. So I think we have to wait and see how the audience responds to it. Hopefully, they’ll like it,” he added.
John Wick: Chapter 5 Plot and Cast
If the sequel does get made, it will probably focus on how the assassin survived the tragic events of the previous film’s ending. At the same time, the concrete storyline can not be guessed at the moment since the film has not been announced yet.
As for the cast, Keanu Reeves is surely expected to return. Rina Sawayama will also return as Akira, based on the post-credits scene on JW4. Other franchise veterans might also reprise their roles, including Ian McShane as Winston and Laurence Fishburne as The Bowery King.
Two John Wick Spin-Offs are Currently in Production
While the fate of John Wick: Chapter 5 is not clear yet, Lionsgate has already confirmed a couple of spin-offs based on the character. The first one is Ballerina, a film based on the ballerina assassin Rooney played by Ana de Armas. The actress will be joined by Reeves, Ian McShane, Anjelica Huston, and the late Lance Reddick in the film.
Then there is a prequel TV series named The Continental. The show, slated to release on Peacock later this year, will star Mel Gibson and Colin Woodell and follow the life of Winston Scott.
