The Desus and Mero era has finally ended as Desus & Mero part ways as the comedy duo. On Monday (July 19), the pair’s Showtime series, Desus & Mero, announced that comedians and longtime collaborators are ending their collaboration and that the show would be coming to an end after four seasons.
Pursuing Separate Creative Endeavors…
Desus & Mero have called it quits, professionally. The decision comes after the pair returned for the fourth season of their Showtime series in March. If you’ve watched the series, you’d know that the fourth series saw constant cuts on their on-screen time, going weekly rather than twice a week. The final episode of their show aired on June 23.
A Showtime spokeswoman said, “Desus Nice and The Kid Mero will be pursuing separate creative endeavours moving forward. Showtime’s late-night talk show Desus & Mero will not be returning for a fifth season. She continued:
“Desus Nice and The Kid Mero have made a name for themselves in comedy and in the late-night space as quick-witted cultural commentators. Throughout its run, the series won a WGA Award, received Critics’ Choice nominations and scored interviews with President Barack Obama, President Joe Biden, Derek Jeter, Missy Elliott, Denzel Washington, Charlize Theron, David Letterman, Yo-Yo Ma and many more. They have been brilliant hosts, and we wish them the best, along with the team at Jax Media and the incredible crew.”
The pair had recently returned back on track after filming much of their show from home during the pandemic. The shows received a lot of buzz. Desus & Mero also returned with their first official showrunner – J.D. Amato, exec producer of The Chris Gethard Show, and senior field producer of The Problem with Jon Stewart.
Desus, whose real name is Daniel Baker and The Kid Mero, who goes by Joel Martinez launched the Showtime series in 2019 and made over 170 episodes to date. The pair was able to bring in high-profile guests like Joe Biden (when he was not a president), President Barack Obama, David Letterman and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Called “the future of late-night” by Letterman, the Showtime version is the duo’s third series having previously hosted a show on Complex TV (2014) and on Viceland (2016). Apart from this, the duo produced over 250 episodes of their Bodega Boys podcast.
What’s The Reason For Their Split?

Per a tweet shared on the show’s official handle, Desus and Mero will not be returning for the fifth season. The final episode of their previous instalment aired on June 23. The reason is plain and simple. The duo has decided that they will be “pursuing separate creative endeavours moving forward.”
Even though the duo did not comment on the decision of their split, Desus posted a cryptic tweet three days ago. He wrote: “The hive deserved better than this ending. Reddit can slander my name but when the truth comes out…..actually just wait.”
Previously, Mero had spoken about having a soul connection with Desus. He spoke in an interview, “We have a soul connection. We could finish each other’s sentences. Like, if he’s on Mars and I’m on Jupiter, but we have a strong Wi-Fi connection, it doesn’t matter. The physical closeness helps with physical comedy, but like, jokes hit no matter what.”
The duo also wrote a book together in 2020, “God-Level Knowledge Darts: Life Lessons from the Bronx. Well, things aren’t the same as they used to be as the two decide to part ways. While the reason given sounds reasonable, Desus’ tweet raises doubts that there is much to the story and that something happened between the two. What do you think?
