Barbie is surely one of the most hyped films of the year. The release of the film is just around the corner, and the Margot Robbie starrer has generated enough buzz on social media due to its quirky trailers and visuals.
The film features a pink Barbie Land which appears to be taken straight out of a toy world. Audiences are now wondering how did the crew manage to create the elaborate set and where did the filming of Barbie take place. Well, read on to find out.
Barbie Filming Locations
The filming for Barbie took place in England and in the state of California. The cameras started rolling in March 2022 and the shooting concluded in July 2022. However, the team then had to do some reshoots in April this year. Here are all the locations where the filming for Barbie occurred:
Venice, Los Angeles
A significant portion of the Barbie movie was filmed in the Venice neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. The cast and crew were spotted around Venice Beach. Some pictures of Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling surfaced online in June 2022, which showed the two lead stars roller skating at the Venice Beach Skate Park in neon and pink outfits.
Will Ferrell, who plays the CEO of Mattel, was also seen with roller skates at the locations, along with British comedian Jamie Demetriou and Connor Swindells. The cast also shot for some prominent sequences at some other locations in Los Angeles. The city, being the home to Hollywood, has served as a filming location for several projects over the years.
Recent films including Fast X, Evil Dead Rise, Your Place or Mine, Babylon, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, Avatar: The Way of Water, Don’t Worry Darling, Top Gun: Maverick, Guardians of the Galaxy 3, Everything Everywhere All at Once, and Bullet Train were all shot in Los Angeles.
Watford, England
The Barbieland that has been seen in the film’s teasers and trailers was actually set in the town of Watford in England. The production team made use of the Warner Bros. Studios in Leavesden in the town to create an elaborate pink set. CGI effects were later used in post-production to give finer details to the human-sized toy world.
The film’s director Greta Gerwig apparently took inspiration for the set from the Kaufmann House situated in Palm Springs, California. The house, designed by architect Richard Neutra in 1946, is often described as ‘an architectural marvel.’
As for Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden, the 200-acre property features 19 sound stages along with a 55-acre back lot, multiple office spaces, workshops, and world-class filmmaking facilities.
Earlier, a number of films have been shot in Watford, including The Flash, Mission: Impossible – Fallout, The Dark Knight, The Batman, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Justice League, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 and 2, Kingsman: The Secret Service, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, and Spider-Man: Far from Home.
