Famous musicians have been the subject of films for a long time, and it’s not hard to figure out why. Turns out people love going to see these movies about their favourite artists even if they are somewhat fictionalized versions.
There are many reasons for this phenomenon. The stories behind these incredible lives make for compelling drama, and filmmakers can turn them into blockbusters. But one of the most obvious is that audiences are naturally drawn to stars who are larger than life.
It’s not just the actors who benefit from being immortalized on the big screen: The music itself has a chance to shine, too.
Right from films like Bohemian Rhapsody, various musically gifted yet underappreciated artists like Ray Charles and Elvis Presley are now the subject of big-screen blockbusters, but it’s about time another lyrically talented name got their due—someone like, say, “Weird Al” Yankovic?
Yes, a new musical biopic is making a loud noise around the internet with its unique story and star cast. If you grew up in the 90s or early ’00s then no doubt you’re familiar with “Weird Al” Yankovic’s incredibly catchy cover songs, his wide popularity brought his accordion-based originals into the mainstream.
He rose to fame by doing a spoof of “Madonna’s “Like A Virgin” into a weird but funny medical version called Like A Surgeon. The upcoming biopic featuring Daniel Radcliff is here with a fresh trailer. Check out this article to know more.
Weird: The Al Yankovic Trailer Highlighting Life Of Weird But Lovable Musician
“Weird: The Al Yankovic Story,” will take us on a journey to get to see the notoriously off-beat humorist try and make it in the music industry.
He invokes his past fridges, planets, accordion playing and more with his tracks, leaving behind a sheltered home life of no pressure to build a career and become a music icon.
The trailer sets the tone of the comedy while highlighting Weird Al’s past. The trailer shows the humorous but complex mood to expect from the film while also highlighting Weird Al’s “complicated history.”
Radcliffe looks very much like Yankovic in the fresh trailer with his curly hair. He also seemed eccentric and had a tendency to do things that most people wouldn’t do. The trailer also gives us a brief glimpse at Evan Rachel Wood as Madonna.
She is shown entering into his life to take his career a level ahead by making spoofs on her famous songs.
The trailer also shows Al’s complicated relationship with Madonna which eventually affects his career. Weird combines glitzy, quirky synth sounds with Yankovic’s usual goofy humour and an exploration of some aspects of his life that fans might not know about.
When is Weird Al releasing?
The upcoming musical biopic, Weird, Al Yankovic’s story, is set to premiere at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival on September 8.
The film has been selected under the Midnight Madness category. Shortly after that, the film will be released on The Roku Channel to stream for free.
The film is bringing Daniel Radcliff in the titular role along with Evan Rachel Wood, Rainn Wilson, Toby Huss, Julianne Nicholson and Quinta Brunson.
To sum it up, Parody films about musicians who have made their careers through parody can be fun to watch.
