Weakest Link is all set to return to NBC. The show has been renewed for a third season by the network. Jane Lynch will return as the host of the game show, which is based on the format of the British show The Weakest Link.
While the previous season of the show, which aired in March this year, consisted of only 13 episodes, NBC has ordered 20 episodes for the upcoming season. Read on to know more about the show and its new season.
Production of the Third Season will Begin in Fall 2022
As per reports, work on the third season will start in fall this year. The show has been renewed following an increase in viewership. NBC has said that the second season of the show reached over 17 million viewers across linear and digital platforms. The show also improved the network’s 10 pm timeslot viewership by up to 30%.
Talking about the new season, Valerie Bruce, general manager of BBC Studios Los Angeles Productions, said, “This represents an exciting new chapter for us and for the millions of fans around the world who have rallied behind ‘Weakest Link’ over the years: a fresh opportunity to take the series to new heights this season by collaborating with the one and only Jane Lynch whose razor-sharp wit is the perfect match for the fastest and fiercest game show on TV.”
“We’re thrilled to continue our partnership with NBC on the hit series that puts your smarts and your speed to the ultimate test. I’m very much looking forward to a third season of mocking contestants and encouraging discord,” she added.
Each Episode of the Show Features Eight Contestants
The show features eight strangers in each episode who need to work together to win the maximum prize money in each round. The contestants answer general knowledge questions one by one and try to create a chain of correct answers.
The chain’s value is highly increased by consecutive correct answers, but a wrong answer breaks the chain and the contestants are then made to start over with the smallest amount of money. At the end of each round, contestants vote to term a fellow contestant as the ‘weakest link’ in the chain. The contestant who receives the maximum votes leaves the game.
Weakest Link First Aired on NBC in 2001
The show first debuted on NBC in April 2001. However, it was canceled the following year with ten episodes left unaired. In July 2020, it was announced that the series would be revived with Jane Lynch as host and executive producer.
The first season of the rebooted series premiered on September 29, 2020, and a second one followed on March 13, 2022. Weakest Link is co-produced by BBC Studios Los Angeles Productions and Universal Television Alternative Studio. The original British show aired on BBC One and BBC Two and, followed by production in 46 other territories.
Apart from Lynch, Ryan O’Dowd for BBC Studios serves as the executive producer, with Stuart Krasnow and Aaron Solomon acting as showrunners. A release date for the next season has not been announced yet.
