Vinland Saga Season 2 Release Date Confirmed
The epic anime series is returning to screens with its second season on January 9, 2023. The show will be simulcasted on Netflix and Crunchyroll, which means the two streaming platforms will release the weekly episodes at the same time as their Japanese premiere.
The new season will be set one year after the events of the first season. A trailer for the upcoming installment has also been unveiled, which shows Thorfinn working as a slave under a farmer in Denmark. After being unable to avenge his father’s murder by killing Askeladd, Thorfinn now seems lost in his life.
A new character, Einar, is then introduced, who works as a fellow slave and encourages Thorfinn to find a purpose in his life. King Canute the Great also makes an appearance in the trailer and plans to wage war against Denmark to create a ‘paradise’ on earth.
The First Season of the Anime Won Several Awards
When the show first aired in 2019, it was widely appreciated for thrilling fight sequences and captivating character arcs. The anime went on to win the Anime of the Year Award at the 6th Anime Trending Awards in 2019.
The second season seems just as exciting, with the official description saying, “A new millennium begins in the southern part of the Jutland peninsula in Denmark. After the death of his longtime enemy, Askeladd, Thorfinn lost his purpose in life. He was bought by the landowner Ketil as a “slave” and engaged in land reclamation work on his farm.”
“Thorfinn meets a young man there, Einar, who was also a slave like him. The encounter with Einar led Thorfinn to face the sins he had committed and began to find meaning in life. On the other hand, Canute, who became the King of England, attempted to extend his territory for the establishment of the promised land,” the description reads further.
The New Season will have Unique Storytelling, says Director
Shuhei Yabuta, who helmed the first season, is returning as the director. Talking about what to expect from the new season, he said, “Showy events will decrease and the pace of the story will slow down. However, the emotions of the characters move more greatly and fiery. I promise that there is a unique experience like no other. I hope you all enjoy season 2!”
“Some people might think that the story of this season isn’t suitable for anime series, but I don’t. Certainly the storytelling is unique. But there is an important phase of the whole story in this season. And I believe it will make this anime special,” Yabuta revealed on Twitter.
While the team of animators and writers remains the same, the new season is produced by MAPPA, instead of Wit Studio, who worked on the debut season.
