Mindy Kaling Voices the Titular Character

The series features Mindy Kaling as the voice of Velma, along with Constance Wu as Daphne Blake, Sam Richardson as Norville “Shaggy” Rogers, Glenn Howerton as Fred Jones, Russell Peters as Aman Dinkley, Melissa Fumero as Sophie, Sarayu Blue as Diya Dinkley, Jane Lynch as Donna Blake, and Wanda Sykes as Linda Blake.

The rest of the voice cast includes Cherry Jones as Victoria Jones, Frank Welker as William Jones, Nicole Byer as Blythe Rogers, Gary Cole as Lamont Rogers, Stephen Root as Sheriff Cogburn, “Weird Al” Yankovic as Dandruff Tuba, Fortune Feimster as Olive, Yvonne Orji as Gigi, Ming-Na Wen as Carroll, Shay Mitchell as Brenda and Debby Ryan as Krista.

The Series will Tell the Origin Story of Velma Dinkley

Mindy Kaling also serves as the executive producer, along with Charlie Grandy, Howard Klein, and Sam Register. Kaling recently opened up about the inspiration behind the show and said, “We knew it would be fun for me to play Velma, but we had a conversation where Velma is white, and we have this new choice to do the show.”

“And if I’m voicing her, should she be white or should she not? We were really inspired by Into The Spider-Verse — it’s animation, we can do anything. The essence of Velma is not necessarily tied to her whiteness. And I identify so much as her character, and I think so many people do, so it’s like, yeah, let’s make her Indian in this series,” she added.

The official synopsis for the series reads, “VELMA is an adult animated comedy series telling the origin story of Velma Dinkley, the unsung and under appreciated brains of the Scooby-Doo Mystery Inc. gang. This original and humorous spin unmasks the complex and colorful past of one of America’s most beloved mystery solvers.”
