Priyanka Chopra and Mindy Kaling are two powerhouse brown women who are seriously rocking the small screen with their adroit powers. Both stars have made the Forbes list of Highest Paid Television Actresses with Chopra at number 8 and Kaling at the third spot, tying with “Grey’s Anatomy” star Ellen Pompeo.
In the last year, Chopra made $10 million while Kaling made $13 million. Chopra’s international work has her earnings coming from not just her ABC show “Quantico” but also her film “Baywatch,” endorsement deals that have seven-figure paychecks, Bollywood films and regional films she’s produced through her production house, Purple Pebbles Productions. Chopra is a global icon and her success in America deserves all the praise. In a short time, she has built a successful career from scratch after stepping away from her lucrative career in Indian cinema.
Kaling is a comedian, writer, producer, and actress. She started her career on “The Office” and later wrote and produced her show “The Mindy Project.” Though Fox canceled the series in 2015, Hulu picked it up and now, in its sixth season, the comedy will come to an end on Nov. 14.
What are these fabulous ladies up to now?
Chopra is currently working on the latest season of her hit show “Quantico” on ABC. She is also working with the network to produce a new show that is based on the life of the legendary Bollywood actress, Madhuri Dixit-Nene. It revolves around a film actress who has to move to Colorado for her husband’s job just like Dixit-Nene had.
Chopra is also working on several films. In the romantic comedy “Isn’t it Romantic?” she plays a yoga instructor. The movie stars Rebel Wilson, Adam DeVine, and Liam Hemsworth. In “A Kid Like Jake,” she plays a single mom and will share screen space with Claire Danes, Jim Parsons, and Octavia Spencer. Chopra has signed on to produce and star in the biopic on astronaut Kalpana Chawla. It looks like this might be a trending topic because she will also star opposite Aamir Khan in “Salute,” a biographical drama based on astronaut Rakesh Sharma.
Kaling, who is pregnant with her first baby, is writing and producing a new comedy show for NBC titled “Champions” along with “The Mindy Project’s” executive producer Charlie Grandy. This new show is a comedy about siblings, a gym owner with no real goals in life and his good-looking brother. Their lives change drastically when a former high school fling (a cameo by Kaling) shows up with the gym owner’s teenage son. The show will star Anders Holm, Andy Favreau, J.J. Totah, Mouzam Makkar and Nina Wadia.
Hulu recently commisioned another project by Kaling. The actress is vocal about her love for rom-coms, it’s no surprise she’s bringing the famous movie “Four Weddings and a Funeral” to the small screen.
She’s working on two films, “Ocean’s Eight” and “A Wrinkle in Time.” “Ocean’s Eight” has an all-female cast featuring Helena Bonham Carter, Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Rihanna and more. “A Wrinkle in Time” is Disney’s remake of the novel and Kaling plays the role of Mrs. Who. The film stars Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Storm Reid, Zach Galifianakis and Chris Pine.
It’s hard to keep up with these versatile ladies, but one can only try. We’re excited for all of these projects and everything else they do to make us proud.
