2017-box-office

The Bollywood film industry has produced some truly amazing movies in 2017. The versatility in the industry has progressed, as today we have top films that range in genre from fantasy action like blockbuster “Bahubali 2: The Conclusion” to the romance films like the novel-based “Half Girlfriend” to the realistic comedy with heart, “Hindi Medium.”

So, which films take home the award for highest grossing films of the year? We turn to the official Box Office records to figure out the math on this one. The order of the films vary according to their total net gross in India and worldwide, but the top 12 films don’t change much. Interestingly, there are a lot of sequels and remakes that reach the top 12 position on the list.

Let’s jump right into the current top 12 highest net grossing films in India!

1. Babubali 2: The Conclusion

This historical drama is an epic sequel to “Bahubali” which released in 2015. “Bahubali” became an instant hit with viewers, so it comes as no surprise that “Bahubali 2: The Conclusion” was met with the same love from fans.

The film has made it to the “All Time Blockbuster” list on Box Office India, the highest honor it can receive!

2. Golmaal Again

This year, the nonsensical comic stylings of the “Golmaal” crew was exactly what we needed. This comedy flick rocked it’s success all the way to the top, becoming the second highest grossing film of the year in India. Parineeti Chopra and Tabu joined the band of boys on their adventure in “Golmaal Again.”

3. Judwaa 2

Varun Dhawan‘s work in “Judwaa 2,” the remake of Salman Khan’s hit “Judwa,” had fans coming back for more. His dance skills, comedy and adorkable style was double the fun as he played Raja and Prem in “Judwaa 2.”

Dhawan is turning into quite the comedy hero, looks like he is following in the footsteps of his hero, Govinda.

4. Toilet: Ek Prem Katha

Action hero Akshay Kumar is changing things up with unique films that send a positive social message, like “Toilet: Ek Prem Katha.” This hit film is a satirical comedy that brings attention to the poor sanitation conditions in India. The film emphasizes the need to build toilets for men and women to eradicate open defecation, definitely a film worthy of its position as the fourth highest grossing film of the year in India.

5. Raees

Shah Rukh Khan’s portrayal of an illegal alcohol smuggler during times of prohibition in Gujrat, India was much appreciated by critics and fans. The role was a different one for Khan as he wasn’t purely good or bad, and the shades of gray added depth to the character. “Raees” also marked the Bollywood debut of Pakistani actress Mahira Khan.

6. Tubelight

Salman Khan’s performance as a developmentally disabled young man didn’t get a lot of love from critics but the massive Khan fandom all showed up to support. Though filmmakers weren’t able to win over critics with their story, they still praised the film’s attempt to spread positivity with messages of love, faith, family, and a little magic.

7. Badrinath Ki Dulhania

This romantic comedy brought back the magical duo Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt for another round of laughs and over-the-top masala filled antics. Between the cracks and the masala overdose, there lies an actual story found commonly in India: daughter-in-laws who aren’t given the same opportunities as sons even when they are more qualified.

8. Jolly LLB 2

The sequel to “Jolly LLB” managed to sneak into the top ten films of 2017. Starring Akshay Kumar, Huma Qureshi, Saurabh Shukla and Annu Kapoor, the film takes a satirical approach to portraying the Indian legal system. Like the original film. “Jolly LLB 2” also follows a small-time lawyer who takes on some criminals with powerful reach in order to get justice.

Two top films in one year for Kumar? Khiladi is on a roll!

9. Kaabil

Hrithik Roshan and Yami Gautam’s love story between two blind people had the power to be a stunning story but it didn’t quite make it there. Roshan’s performance received high praise from most critics, but unfortunately, the revenge plot of the story couldn’t win them all over.

Releasing the same weekend as Shah Rukh’s “Raees” didn’t help but they still managed to end out the year as the ninth top film of 2017.

10. Baadshaho

Ajay Devgn holds the tenth position our list of highest grossing films in India with “Baadshaho,” however many critics felt the historical drama’s execution was lacking. Set in the emergency era of 1975-1977 in India, a princess sends her most loyal team to recapture the gold of her kingdom that was taken by the government. “Baadshaho” likely made it top 10 because of the action-loving fans of Devgn and Vidyut Jamwal. The film also stars Illeana D’Cruz, Esha Gupta, and Emraan Hashmi.

11. Hindi Medium

Irrfan Khan and Saba Qamar kill it in “Hindi Medium” as middle-class parents trying painfully to provide the best they can for their child. Their crazy tactics and the lessons they learn along the way are so beautifully executed, “Hindi Medium” deserves to be higher on this list.

12. Secret Superstar

Another film that should have placed higher on this list is Aamir Khan’s “Secret Superstar.” It is a touching story of a young Muslim girl with an abusive father trying to follow her dreams. The most powerful part is how she helps her mother find the courage to fight back. Lead actress Zaira Wasim was showered with praise for her magnificent performance.

The year’s not over yet! Salman Khan’s “Tiger Zinda Hai” just released and the film has raked in 150 crores and counting in just one week. The film is set to knock “Golmaal Returns” off its post as the second highest grossing film of the year. It’s still not too late to shake up this list of top 12 films. Do you think “Tiger Zinda Hai” will make it?
