This year, the Tony Awards were handed out on Sunday night, June 11, 2023. The Tony Awards are held every year to honor the best in theater. The 76th annual Tony Awards took place at the United Palace in New York City.
For those of you who are unaware, let us share with you, the West Side Story star and Oscar winner Ariana DeBose served as the host of the award show for the second time in a row. Read on to know the names of the 2023 Tony Awards winners.
Who was the big winner of the night?
The answer to the above question is Kimberly Akimbo. The musical took home a total of five awards including best musical, best book of a musical, lead actress for Victoria Clark, and best original score.
On Sunday night, Leopoldstadt bagged the trophy for best play, meanwhile, Lori Parks’ Topdog/Underdog was named best revival of a play. Parade nabbed the award for best revival of a musical.
When we talk about the lead acting categories, Jodie Comer picked up the award for best performance by an actress in a play for Prima Facie. Openly Nonbinary actor J. Harrison Ghee made history by winning best performance by an actor in a musical for his brilliant acting in the musical Some Like It Hot.
Sean Hayes received the award for best actor in a play for Good Night, Oscar, on the other hand, Victoria Clark walked away with the trophy for best actress in a musical for Kimberly Akimbo. Brandon Uranowitz won best actor in a featured role in a play for Leopoldstadt meanwhile, Bonnie Milligan won best actress in a featured role in a musical for Kimberly Akimbo.Â
As per a report by Deadline, a total of eleven Tonys were presented during the hour-plus preshow. Along with this, 15 more were handed out in primetime.
