The Promised Land Gets Canceled, Fans Are Upset

Promised land will not be coming back with a new season on your screens. ABC has canceled the Latinx drama after just one season.

Why Was Promised Land Cancelled?

Although fans may be disappointed, this news is not surprising. The show was the least-watched on ABC. Also, one of the lowest-rated scripts was pulled from the schedule after just five episodes. The remaining 10 episodes from season 1 were released exclusively on Hulu.

Overall, the show had a 0.2 demo rating and around 1.86 million viewers in Live+. Although it got a 100% rating on rotten tomatoes, the show, unfortunately, did not succeed in growing its audience.

What Was The Promised Land About?

The series takes you on a ride where a Latinx family fights for power and wealth in Sonoma Valley, California. Joe Sandoval is the third largest wine producer in the country. Everyone around him is trying to take control and become powerful.

The show starred John Ortiz as Joe Sandoval, Cecilia Suárez as Lettie Sandoval, Tonatiuh as Antonio Sandoval, Christina Ochoa as Veronica Sandoval, Augusto Aguilera as Mateo Sandoval, Mariel Molino as Carmen Sandoval, Katya Martín as Juana Sánchez, Andres Velez as Carlos Rincón, Rolando Chusan as Billy and Bellamy Young as Margaret Honeycroft. All the cast members were Latino, which is uncommon for American series.

Executive producers of the show included writer Matt Lopez, director Michael Cuesta, Adam Kolbrenner along with Maggie Malina. It was executively produced by Michael Cuesta. ABC Signature, a part of Disney Television Studios produced the show.

The show also touched upon the stereotype of patriarchal families in Latino families. It also talked about LGBT issues. One of the characters, Antonio is gay. Unlike most Latino families who ridiculed or disowned same-sex relationships, Matt Lopez wanted to show a different angle. Antonio’s father was okay with his sexuality but wanted him to keep it a secret in public.

The storyline could not develop further as the show got canceled.

Mariel Molino talked about her character. She said, “My character, Carmen, is a bit of an underestimated player. She’s the artist of the family. No one really expects anything from her. That is what makes her dangerous.”

Fans Are Disappointed

Fans of the show, although not many, are disappointed that ABC pulled the show.

Another fan commented on a post “I loved the show and I’m very disappointed there will not be a season 2 . The show is actually a hit hands down 🙌🏾”.

Another fan shared the sentiment and wrote “We are sorry that this series wasn’t given more time. We felt that it was excellent. Please give it another chance.”

A fan was visibly upset over the show being canceled over ratings.

A fellow tweeter commented how the show was not given an opportunity to build an audience.

Fans are hopeful that the show will be picked on by other networks like Hulu. There are numerous examples of tv shows and even classic movies that failed upon release. But went on to become part of history.
