Living off the radar, a former CIA operative finds himself evading assailants who want to kill him. Yes! You are guessing the right TV show. It is the story of “The Old Man”- one of the popular and “most-watched” TV shows of FX entertainment. But now the viewers are thinking about how long Dan Chase can run?
After the massive hit of season 1, the question arises whether “The Old Man” show has been canceled or renewed for the next season on the FX channel? A lot of news is coming about this TV show’s latest renewal or cancellation. So, this article is for the television vulture about the current status of The Old Man, Season 2.
The Old Man Season 1 So Far
The Old Man Season 1 has been airing on 16th June 2022 on the FX cable channel. The entire plot revolves around a former CIA officer Dan Chase (Jeff Bridges). Chase fled from his agency a decade ago and has been living off the grid ever since. But the story starts when an assassin shows up and tries to kill him. And at that time, Chase realized it was time to reconcile his past to secure his future.
In the other plot, it was seen that the FBI’s Assistant Director for Counterintelligence, Harold Harper (Lithgow), is called on to find Chase. The reason for this hunting game was Chase’s convoluted past which is associated with the renegade fugitive.
In this team, Agent Angela Adams (Shawkat) and Agent Raymond Water (Ej Bonilla) joined as the protégé of Harper. But it seems more difficult to apprehend Chase than the authorities had anticipated. At that time, Julian Carson (Gbenga Akinnagbe), a highly-skilled special-ops contractor, is sent to pursue him.
While on the run, Chase rents a room from Zoe McDonald, played by Brenneman. She must draw on reserves she never knew she had to live once and learns the truth about her new tenant.
The story is based on Thomas Perry’s best-selling book “The Old Man”. Season one of the series was about the gripping tale of the Past and Present lives of Dan Chase. And it ends with many unexpected turns and unsettling scenes that leave viewers in an urge for the next season.
Season One Rating
On June 16, 2022, “The Old Man” was first airing with its first two episodes. As per FX entertainment, with the release, The Old Man has become the most-watched cable series since January 2021. According to Nielsen Live+3 rating, The Old Man S1 outperformed 60 other basic and premium cable drams. Though, the series still cannot break out the digital streaming number with only 884,000 viewers in Live+ same-day rating.
Even though these figures exclude further delayed or streaming viewing. But, they are a very reliable indication of a show’s performance, especially compared to other programs on the same channel. And the series has already made a debut on Hulu as the most-watched FX series on its opening weekend.
There can be other economic variables that may play a role in a show’s demise. We don’t know yet! But, generally, higher-rated shows get renewed while lower-rated ones get canceled.
Let’s see what will be the ultimate fate of The Old Man?
The Ultimate fate of The Old Man Season 2
The sitcom, created by Robert Levine and Jonathan E. Steinberg, took a while to get on television. When it was shut down at the beginning of the epidemic, the production was already well underway. When the filming was restarted again, it had to be paused as Bridges was diagnosed with cancer. And finally, it resumed earlier this year.
Now, the viewers of this cable series want to know about the final fate of “The Old Man Season 2″. So, here is the good news. Warren Littlefield, and his teams (executive producers), thanked 20th Television for “unwavering faith and support on them”.
In a recent interview, Eric Schrier, President of FX Entertainment, confirmed Season 2 of The Old Man. “Jonathan E. Steinberg, Warren Littlefield, and Dan Shotz have done a fantastic job with the Old Man, Season one. And we are excited to “raise the bar again” with season two in collaboration with 20th Television”.
The President of 20th Television, Karey Burke, gushed about the success of the show. He states, “The positive reception from critics and viewers about the show is very satisfying. This is because this excellent series had a difficult time getting on the air. But the truth is, no one who has worked on it for the previous three years is surprised by its strong resonance”.
So, when the viewers can expect the next installment of this show? Who will return to the series to get another breathtaking ride?
The Old Man Season 2 potential release date
Unfortunately, FX Entertainment or 20th Television did not officially announce any date about the release. The first season of this series has just only aired, though. So, we all have to wait a bit before drumming out fingers irritably!
Season one of The Old Man was released on 16th June 2022. So the summer premiere of season two can be anticipated.
The expected cast of The Old Man Season 2
There is no doubt that Jeff Bridges will return to S2 with the role of Dan Chase as the main protagonist.
You can hope to see the reprise version of the following roles in season 2:
Amy Brenneman as Zoe
John Lithgow as Harold Harper
Alia Shawkat as Angela Adams
EJ Bonilla as Raymond Water
Gbenga Akinnagbe as Julian Carson
Faran Tahir as Rahmani
Navid Negahban as Hamzad
Kenneth Mitchell as Joe
Noor Razooky as Kaftar
Pej Vahdat as young Hamzad
The plot of The Old Man Season 2
In the trailer of The Old Man S1, there was a moment where you can witness the literal montage of Chase’s finest hit. The former CIA agent gives one man a Spock pinch/Aikido technique. He slams another man’s skull into a desk while shooting a gun at an attacker.
In another plot, you can hear that Chase is warning the FBI suit with the word: “Any more you send after me, I’m sending back in bags”.
After this kind of action and tough quotes, viewers expect similar breathtaking plots in Season 2. Though, it is presumed that the events of season one will probably be continued in season two. And this implies that the S2 of The Old Man will address the subplot gaps that may have been left unresolved.
So, season 2 might contain something different instead of the same old story! The series already enticed viewers when it first aired on television. So, it is a matter of time to see how the producers deal with this pressure and introduce something new to the story.
So, catch up on the prior episodes of The Old Man season 1 while you are waiting for The Old Man Season 2.
Episode 5 was very boring, all talking no action.
I loved watching Jeff Bridges in The Old Man based on the novel by Thomas Perry which I also read and it makes for an absorbing and compelling read. If you liked Bill Fairclough’s epic spy novel Beyond Enkription in The Burlington Files series or The Courier, the Cumberbatch film about Greville Wynne, you should love The Old Man and vice versa. Just like Ben Macintyre’s The Spy and the Traitor about KGB Colonel Oleg Gordievsky, these are all “must reads or must views” for espionage cognoscenti.
